Malina

Backstory

Malina was born in a big city into a small family. She lived there since birth, with her mother, father and younger sister.

When Malina was a child, she dreamed of becoming a superhero. She really liked the idea of having special powers and using them to save people. She didn’t have any special powers, however. That didn’t discourage her though, and she decided to wait until her powers came through.

When Malina was 4, her mother gave birth to the second child – a girl named Amura. Malina loved her little sister to bits and was glad to help their mom take care of the baby. As long as it didn’t interfere with her special superhero training routine, of course.

Time passed, Malina was already 11, and she still didn’t have any powers. She started to become impatient and anxious. Why didn’t her powers come through? Sure, most people already had them at birth, but it wasn’t uncommon for the powers to make themselves known later in life, somewhere around early teens. Why did hers not appear? If she didn’t have them, she wouldn’t be able to become a superhero, and it was her biggest dream. How could she make it happen?

After another year of anxious waiting, Malina approached her mother about this problem. That resulted in a conversation that changed the way she looked at things: “Sometimes our ambitions blind us to the real things”. Her mother told her that if she doesn’t have any powers by now, then she shouldn’t wait for them anymore and focus on something else. That made Malina seriously question a lot of things. She really wanted to make the world a better place, but how could she do that without being a superhero?

She started considering other options that could do that, like becoming a nurse, a firefighter and etc. But time and time again she got disappointed with each one. She couldn’t handle the physical training for a firefighter, she was not good at chemistry and biology, and couldn’t become a nurse. When she was 15, her eyes started to become sensitive to bright light, be it natural or artificial. That could be easily fixed by shades, but that still dampened Malina’s spirits even more. The more she tried to reach her dream, the harder she failed.

When Malina was around seventeen, she reached peek of hopelessness and slowly started realize that she simply won’t be able to save or help people the way she wanted. During this time, she became really fascinated with rave culture and rave music. One of her classmates invited her to a rave party, and Malina agreed, because she thought she needed something to distract herself with.

At first she was having fun with dancing and all the bright lights, but at some point during the party her friend offered her a joint. She was reluctant at first, but ended up accepting and getting high. She felt very good, and once she was offered an LSD pill, she barely hesitated taking the colourful “stamp”.

The next morning Malina woke up in her classmate’s house with faint memory of what happened last night. She panicked that she basically went on a drug trip and went home immediately. Thankfully, she didn’t get addicted, and the fear she felt the next morning was enough for her to never take drugs again. She got scared, that this is what she came to just because she was desperate for relief of her anxieties. She thought that she got off easy, that there could have been consequences way worse if she got addicted or pushed her limits during the trip and got into trouble or got overdosed.

She ended up telling her sister about what happened and Amura’s strong reaction made Malina seriously think. She realized that she had a really good family that will always be there for her, even when she’s at her lowest. She remembered what her mother told her – about ambitions overshadowing the important stuff, and she decided that she was right. In the end, even if her dream of becoming a superhero didn’t come true, and even if she would never manage to become someone who saves people, she still has people who will always love and support her, and that’s already more than what many people had.

Malina decided to take a break from everything – worrying about powers, about professions, and just decided to relax. She took up interest in gaming and then, while she was at it, in programming. By the time she graduated, she decided to become a programmer. Currently, she is a programmer student and lives with her parents and sister.

Personality

Malina has a very calm personality. It’s very difficult to get a strong reaction out of her, as she usually simply goes with the flow and tries to not get upset by bad things. She’s friendly, but feels uncomfortable around big crowds and unfamiliar people, so she prefers to stay at home and communicate with friends online through video and audio chats during game nights. Pretty laid-back and a good listener. Sometimes gives decent advises.

 Has really good relationship with her family, especially with her little sister – Amura. Though it’s difficult to say that she’s protective of her, because of how casual she is about her antics (she’s just usually say something along the lines of “have fun and don’t kill anybody in the process”). However, if she sees that her sister is in actual trouble and might get hurt, she would immediately step in and get her out of the situation, or at least try as hard as she can.

Abilities

Malina doesn’t have any “special” abilities, but she can program pretty well. Has pretty in-depth knowledge of computer science. She can also cook decently - she taught her sister to cook at some point.
