Profile

Lapis "Lapin" Lazuli lived a rather uneventful, but productive, life. She's neither precious nor common, treated poorly nor with reverance, happy nor unhappy. She simply does her job to the best of her ability like hundreds of other gems. She hadn't even seen a pearl before she met Lilac. When she finally did, however, that was catalyst for the water gem to finally question what had been her simple existance.

It was a simple, common mission. Homeworld was seizing new planets and expanding further out into the galaxy. Lapin was part of the initial team along with several other Lazulis. Homeworld had tasked them with terraforming the new planets to code. Sea Glass was accompanying the expansion team to set up trade routes as they went in a new attempt at efficiency. The other Lazulis gossiped about the accomplished Captain, but Lapin didn't join in. Lapin had no opinion on Sea Glass besides the vague respect for a higher standing gem. Lapin was barely paying attention to them at all when she heard something interesting.

Sea Glass was bringing her pearl with her. This was unusual, but not against protocol, mostly because it was unusual. Why would you bring a pearl along for something like this? It was hardly a mission where you had to flaunt your status. Still, Sea Glass had pushed for her pearl to come with. The terraformers were all aflutter with speculation.

The next day, Lapin and the others were called out of the gully to greet their superiors on deck. The Lazulis were being split into teams when Lapin caught sight of Sea Glass. The famed captain was speaking to the Lazuli's Agate supervisor. She craned her neck to see better after the gossip stirred her curiosity the night before. There, tucked protectively against her side, was the Sea Glass's pearl.

She wasn't the prettiest gem Lapin had ever seen, but something about her was striking. Lilac Pearl had a neutral look on her face as she wrote down everything her master told her to. It wasn't disrespectful, but it was hardly demure, and- Oh! The glare the pearl sent to her master when she wasn't looking was chilling. Lapin was speechless; what could anyone do to deserve thatThe pearl glanced over, eyes narrowing as she caught Lapin's gaze, but Agate was already ushering Lapin away. This would not be their only encounter.

A few nights into the journey, while the other Lazulis were taking advantage of their coveted recreation time, Lapin headed back to their quarry. Gems don't sleep, but still she felt the need to rest alone for a while. Alone was not what she found. There, sitting in Lapin's cubby, was the Lilac Pearl. Her face was neutral, but there was a fire in her eyes.

Lapin met her with a stuttered, confused greeting and Lilac replied with a pleasant one. Lapin half-expected Lilac to threaten her, but the words never came. They simply chatted. There was an unkind edge to how Lilac Pearl laughed, a sarcasm to how she spoke, so unlike what she was like on-duty. This pearl must be defective; no master would create a gem that held such hatred. Not a servant with such hatred, anyway. The only explanation was that she came from bitter earth. Or bitter water, considering her gem type.

 Lapin found herself enthralled.

Before she left, Lilac pulled close and murmured something to the Lazuli. "You're not as obedient as you think you are," she stated, then hushed Lapin before she could interrupt, "even if you'd like to be. If you were, you would have kept your head down. Reported me when you saw. But you didn't. You won'tand I'll tell you why."

"You're like me. You're better than this. Times are changing, changing into something better. Stick with me, and you'll change with them."

So, Lapin did. She stuck with Lilac and, for once, felt alive. She kept in contact with Lilac, dug unsanctioned tunnels for her, and swore to keep her secrets. Lapin had gained entry to both the smuggling ring of the Pirate Queen and, in time, the pirate's heart itself.

Lapin is very quiet and demure. However, this isn't for the reasons you may expect. What her superiors take as politeness and proper respect is, in actuality, just plain apathy. She doesn't care enough to disobey so she does what's easiest and does what she's told. She'd just as easily calmly walk by while they were being shattered than follow orders. She's empty, bored, and not much else.

But she doesn't want to be. She wants to improve, to be better, to reach new heights. She wants to recapture the first time she flew after being created. That joy, that euphoria, that freedom. Unfortunately, there's only so far she can ascend in a caste system like the Diamonds have. She's just a Lapis Lazuli. That is, until she met Lilac. The promise of a better world, of change, was enough to have Lapin follow her to the ends of the universe. It's not like Lilac didn't prove herself; not often did a servant raise herself into a smuggler.

After meeting Lilac, Lapin has been more emotive. Not only happiness, but anger and sadness and everything else. Her eyes are opened to how they must change the world to make a place for themselves. She's even started undermining her Agate supervisor, under the guise of 'pranks', to the amusement of the other Lazulis. She found something she never thought she would; satisfaction. A cause. A way to shrug off the apathy. She's still devolping her personality and opinions, but she's well on her way.

[Likes] not much, these days. water + flying lapis standard. architecture. longs for luxury.

[Dislikes] repetition + routine. tight spaces. group punishments/being interchangeable in the eyes of superiors. Her superiors themselves.

[Strengths] Especially fast. Well-trusted (formerly obedient). Working knowledge of several important gem building layouts.

[Weaknesses] Generally unmotivated. Prone to ennui/restlessness. Easily distracted. Snarky.

Lapis got her nickname 'Lapin' shortly after being created. She stuttered out her gem type while meeting her Agate supervisor for the first time. This was both out of fear and wonder since the Agate was the prettiest gem she'd seen at that point. This made her a favorite right off the bat; that particular Agate was extremely vain. (Out of universe, her nickname is because her water wings resemble bunny ears.)
