Chances are you already know MERCEDES. It’s almost impossible not to! Her band PURE PLATINUM is an international sensation; their first album rocketed to the top of the charts the minute it dropped, and they haven’t left it since. You can barely go five minutes near the magazine rack or on social media without seeing the one and only Mercedes Luz’s face plastered all over them. Fans and reporters alike are raving— according to them, the band’s striking musical sound and snappy lyrics are matched only by their frontwoman’s wild, electric presence onstage.

...Which is why it’s so weird that he’s showed up to this reunion. The name Mercedes Luz doesn’t ring any bells from high school, nor is it in your yearbook, but he seems confident in being here... Did a rock star seriously go to the same school as you?!

MERCEDES LUZ, the beautiful A-list rock star, who positively oozes glamour and charm and the general vibe that he's never had a bad hair day in his life, absolutely, positively, definitely did not go to school with you....but, despite his image as someone who super would crash parties, he's not crashing this one. Because— he wasn't always Mercedes Luz! Even the biggest rock stars used to be normal people too, you know? She's so different now that it's likely few, if any, of you would make the connection until Mercedes tells them herself, but once you do, you might remember what she was like in high school. 

Her name was.... man, what was it? It was something long and fancy and hard to remember, and though her surname (which was hard too— started with a G, you think?) was Japanese, her first name was definitely something foreign, katakana spelling and all.** That kind of name was totally at odds with his personality, though. 

It's not that he was a delinquent or anything... honestly, what'll stand out to you now is how normal he was, compared to the current Mercedes. Not disruptive or rude enough for a delinquent, not well-groomed enough for a prep, too gangly for a jock... he didn't really fit into any kind of clique. He was pretty cool, though, you guess! Laid-back, friendly, and had little trouble making friends, even then. Looking back, he had the kind of clumsy earnestness about him you'd expect from a normal teen; it's been replaced by solid confidence and charm nowadays. 

She didn't really keep in touch after, of course; too busy chasing after her dreams! You don't even really know what she studied in college, if she went at all. She sort of just disappeared and then resurfaced a few years ago as a fully formed sensation.

**Not a deadname! She was already somewhat out by HS and had already picked her new name, which people who knew her well may remember. 'Mercedes Luz' is a stage name, more or less. Like how Lady Gaga has a real name but everyone just calls her Lady Gaga.

Memorable things about high school Mercedes: 

• Already solidly in love with music and planning to start a band, even back then. She was definitely in the music club, and would play her acoustic guitar in the commons any chance she got. yeah she was That Guy i'm sorry. 
• Not the fully shameless, incorrigible flirt she is today, but you can see what that developed from. She crushed easily, and really wanted attention from the ladies. She often tried out for sports teams just to get girls to think she was cool, and either failed the tryouts, or quickly flunked out after taking one too many direct hits to the face. 
• Never mentioned any parents, and you never saw any at open houses or anything... Definitely had an older sibling, though-- she talked about them a fair bit, and you might've caught a glimpse of a person who looked kinda like her (but much more refined) in the audience of her music performances.
