Lupin is one of the most powerful youkai, though he never exerts his status and definitely keeps this hidden from his master, Tansho, who happens to be an extremely weak god. Even earning the name “Rine Wolf” amongst his folktales, despite this he spends his time happily on the nearshore with Tansho attending college as the student body president. Lupin keeps a close eye on all the happenings with the undercover youkai students and relays the information to Tansho. They’re extremely close nowadays, akin to two family members/roommates rather than master and servant.
Though Lupin wasn’t always this strong, originally being from a small group of people with no spoken language that wore animal pelts, only for the boy to be slain by a stray arrow from one of the hunters. By legend, for their souls to rise from the dead they were supposed to be buried with two deer antlers yet Lupin was only buried with one, leaving him extremely powerless compared to other Okuri-Inu. His form was bathed in shadows for a long time before being able to conjure into a small wolf pup, Lupin was able to find other youkai and learn how to speak and function as one of the dead yet always being kept at arm's length for his shortcomings as an Okuri-Inu. And so, he set off to find himself a prospective god to serve and fix him.
