About
Cheesecake is the shapeshifting, dimension-hopping ruler of the Pastry Kingdom, recently having reclaimed her place as the queen after the thirty year conquest. It's more of a symbolic title nowadays, having ceded political power to her council and the people, but she does what she can where she's requested. The castle is now a public government building, and she spends most of her time living the adventurous life she wanted to live from the start.

Backstory
When Cheesecake was 16 (known then as Princess Cheesecake), shortly before she was to be coronated, there was an attack on her kingdom. A mysterious stranger with unknown origins stormed the capital, staging a coup in search of...something. In the struggle, this incredibly powerful foe accidentally knocked her from her balcony, sending her plummeting towards the sea.
Though she had been in the process of learning how to open portals, Princess Cheesecake found herself frozen in the face of impending doom. Interdimensional portal magic is a difficult magic to master- partly due to it being exclusive to the ruling royal family. In the knick of time, her uncle Marquis Shortcake threw out a portal, sending her careening into an unfamiliar world with no way back.
She spent the next several decades hopping dimensions, struggling with her sense of identity and keeping a protective eye on her kingdom from afar, not knowing if she truly wanted to go back or keep her freedom. She came back and took her kingdom back by force once the state of the country fell into a nosedive, the stranger that had taken the throne becoming erratic and carelessly destructive as time wore on.
She technically "rules" as the figurehead as the queen, though in all honesty she's stepped down from her duties, the usurper on her advisory council. What happened between them..?
Shapeshifting
Shapeshifting, in general, is a rare ability. People can shapeshift either by being a shapeshifter by species or learning shapeshifting magic. The natural species has a low population and tend to keep to themselves, and it's a difficult magic to learn; It isn't every day that a you see a shapeshifter. Still, completely out of place in society and tends to be an impressive display for the effort it takes to learn the magic.
Cheesecake is a shapeshifter by species, though in an unorthodox way. You see, shapeshifters are not in her lineage. Not her mother nor father, nor their parents before them and before those either. Something happened before her birth. Something very serious indeed. The royal family, what could they have done?
As a born shifter, Cheesecake's shapeshifting is linked heavily with her emotions. Due to her natural inclination, it takes less effort and energy for her to fully change her body. Because she can shift so easily, though, she has a hard time controlling it when she's experiencing strong emotions. If she stays focused she has a good handle on keeping her form stable, but if she panics she can lose the form a bit too easily for her liking. Either way, shifting is as natural as breathing to her- and she stims with it a lot!
Interdimensional Portal Magic
Protected and kept exclusive to the Royal Family, Interdimensional Portal magic is powerful and well-guarded. Due to the potential of harming alternate dimensions if just any citizen were allowed to learn the magic, it has been kept under lock and key and only passed down through lineage and duty. Used mostly for diplomacy and interdimensional alliances, the citizens of the kingdom are aware of the magic but are currently unsuccessful in learning it themselves. Pursuing it is not exactly discouraged, but the public is warned that it would be dangerous if it were to fall in the wrong hands. The royal family has kept a watchful eye on those pursuing this magic.
Miss Princess Cheesecake had begun to learn how to make the portals shortly before her family was overthrown. Under normal circumstances, the heir would be taugh the skill after officially taking the throne. The Marquis Shortcake, however, saw fit to break the rules when political tension rose, teaching her preemtively for her safety.
Having only begun to learn, she was unable to find her way home. Just barely able to summon portals, she had to find her way in an unfamiliar world. She refined the skill over the next several years, becoming quite skilled despite the interruption in her formal education. She can now effortlessly open and tailor portals to her needs, whether they be for transporation, covert surveillance, or communication.

The closest of friends, reunited after Cheesecake's return to her kingdom. She trusts him immensely, and though she offered him a position in her court and council as the Royal Historian and Strategist, he declined the offer and chose instead to open his own Adventurers guild. They're still very close and spend time together outside of their current duties, happy and eager to catch up.
