Overview

On the surface, Oscar appears as friendly, likeable, and helpful to most - if not a bit overzealous. He's always willing to put aside what he's doing to assist others in their own problems no matter how minute they may be, often to the point where he refuses to give up and continues to push on himself and those around him to try harder and harder to succeed without stopping for anyone or anything. This often, reasonably, makes his peers uncomfortable and sometimes even quite upset at his blatant obliviousness to how they feel.

In actuality, Oscar's determination to fix everyone else's problems in favor of ignoring his own is deeply rooted in his childhood. When he was in his early teens, his mother passed away due to illness, leaving him to take care of his two younger siblings essentially on his own while his father sulked and fell into a deep depression. Due to this situation being thrown onto his back at such a young age, he put immense pressure on himself to be the best parental figure he could be to his siblings while also being the caretaker of his sullen father, forcing him to repress and avoid his own grief.

This role he had to force himself into instead of being able to steadily ease into caused him to inherently feel a discomfort and disconnect when it came to friendships and platonic closeness and affection. Throughout the majority of his life, he simply never had the time for that, so as he matured, his brain became naturally averse to it. When put in situations with others, he simply only looks to see what he can do for them instead of, say, with them, often causing him to come across as tactless and overzealous the more time you spend with him.

Despite his major flaws, many who are acquainted with him due tend to enjoy his company. Even though he is aloof and uncomfortable in friendships, when he views others as acquaintances (sort of in a "co-worker"-like manner), he tends to be less rigid and is more willing to have relaxed conversations with them. While this is still often difficult for him, talking about his work or few interests does give enjoyable results. He is intelligent, well-spoken, and refined, which, of course, causes people to view inherently him favorable - something which certainly works to his benefit.

Due to the fact he tends to be gentle and imperceptible in his pushiness and awkwardness, it often takes a while before those around him actually realize the truth about who he is beneath his mask. His quiet, soft-spoken, and mature nature masks these negative traits and causes people to trust and hang around him more and more often. Though this seems like a good thing, the more time his peers spend around him, the more they begin to realize that his disposition is simply a facade to mask his deeply buried insecurities, worry, and melancholy.

Oscar often finds himself conflicted about is his false optimisim and hope. Part of his pushiness and dependency on helping others arises from his own fear of insignificance and despair. He believes that helping people will not only assist in making an impact on the world around him, but it will also help him convince himself that, no matter what terrible grief and sadness you find yourself drowning in, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Unfortunately, the realization and euphoria that fill him after he has successfully inspired and aided someone in need is often short lived - quickly overtaken by his unprocessed sorrow.

When my mother passed, I realized the pain that is left after death. I don't want anyone to feel that pain after my passing, so I'll try my best to put as much good into the world as I can!

Demeanor

Quirks & habits

Though Oscar is certainly a most regular individual, he, just like every other human, does some odd things now and then. Instead of simply scribbling out his mistakes when writing rough drafts, he insists on throwing away the initial attempt and starting again from scratch. Wasteful? Certainly! Another odd quirk of his is his immunity to tears. It is VERY rare, practically unheard of, for Oscar to cry. He also has very limited and soft facial expressions. This can make it difficult for those around him to tell precisely how he feels about something or what he's thinking - especially since he rarely communicates it.

Communication skills

Oscar is, for the most part, quite good at conversating with others. Most regard him as not only friendly, of course, but also well-spoken and pleasant. Despite this, he can be a bit narrow-minded in his pursuits which may cause those around him to feel neglected. This isn't intentional, though, as he acts out of what he believes is best for not only himself but for those around him, but sometimes he can lose his sights on his true goal.

Showing affection

Oscar is extremely poor at showing affection and appreciation for others - this problem certainly ties into the previous one. Despite his warmhearted nature, he is averse to physical affection especially and is not good at responding to verbal affection. It's not that he doesn't appreciate it... He does! He just isn't sure how to respond, especially since it's difficult for him to be honest with his feelings even if they are positive ones.

Childhood

Oscar grew up with a tight-knit family who relied on each other deeply. As a child, he was much more careless and free than he is now and served as a protecting figure to his siblings while also taking the liberty to be foolish with them. His parents were loyal, caring figures who did their best to support Oscar and his siblings as best they could. Luckily, their family was quite well off due to his father's inherited wealth.

Unfortunately, at the beginning of his teenage years, his mother died in a tragic accident. Oscar was left with a despondent, emotionally absent father and 2 younger, emotionally distressed and confused siblings. He was forced to take up the role of the protector and caretaker of the family. This forced him to push his silly antics to the side so he can prioritize his helpful, maternal role. Unfortunately, due to these responsibilities, he was never given the chance to properly process his emotions and grief as he always had to sacrifice his own wants and feelings for the sake of his siblings' and his father's.

Later into his teenage years, this unfortunate situation ended up leading him to his greatest passion - writing. He found that his siblings found joy in the plays they went to see, thus Oscar decided to start writing plays he would perform for them to cheer them up. Through this, he was able to discover is passion for writing plays and storytelling.

Through his struggles, he was able to finish schooling. Though his father became depressed and essentially absent from their lives, when he was (more or less) responsive, he was always encouraging of and thankful for Oscar and all that he has done. On his birthday every year, Oscar has written and performed a small play with his siblings in hope that his father will cheer up. It always works... just for a brief moment. That brief moment is really all that Oscar needs, though, right?

Once Oscar reached age 19, his father came out of his shell and was able to, well, be a father again. Though it was a long and difficult road there, Oscar is happy for his younger siblings. Though their relationship with him will never be fully repaired, it's a start.

Thanks to his new found independence, Oscar moved out and officially began to work on his career as a playwright. Unfortunately, he hit writer's block soon after his first play was published (which was very successful might I add). For sentimentality and inspiratiion, he dug through his mother's belongings where he found a letter she wrote discussing a town she visited and loved in the countryside named Stonewyck. Struck by her description of it, he set off in search of it. He certainly found it, however... Now he is stuck. Oops! How will he get out? Well, I guess you'll have to read the comic to find out (when I make it... lol).
