Joi Nym

Joi is a young man with great knowledge on the paranormal, he's very stoic with people he's unfamiliar with, and even those who're close to him have barely seen him express his emotions. The few times he's expressed emotions is during his jobs when speaking to those struggling with loss or a spirit who's fearful or upset.

The cape he wears was a gift from his late aunt, he's never let it leave his side since and continues to have Alice or himself keep it in top shape.

Joi and Alice don't remember most of his childhood, their meeting and friendship afterwards has always been the clearest in their minds.

When Joi was 8, he began to communicate with spirits, this all began when he found Alice's lantern in his family's basement. It was rusty, extremely rusty, he asked his uncle if he could fix it, to which his uncle obliged. For the next few days, Joi noticed spirits coming and going through his house; his parents always said it was lies, him looking for attention or scaring his siblings. Of course, his siblings played along with it, they asked him what they looked like, to point at them, to tell the spirits to do something to them or their parents; "Alice wouldn't do that." is all he responded with, his siblings were confused until a ghost came flurrying out of the lantern, giggling away at the horrified looks it gave them, Alice began to explain who they were; "I am a simple spirit here to protect Joi." with that, his siblings began screaming for their parents, even they were in shock, Alice didn't let them near Joi, not even a few feet close. Due to fear of Alice, his parents began to neglect Joi, which caused the chain of events that made Alice the caretaker of Joi, they began to instruct him on how to earn a small bit of cash, enough to buy a small meal from the gas station, when Joi was nearing his 12th birthday, an employee finally asked him the question Alice was waiting for; "Are you being abused at home?"

Many investigations went by where Joi has to stay with his aunt, who passed away a month after his 12th birthday, it was only a few hours later did Joi recieve the news he was being adopted by the same employee who asked him the question, she was a very sweet girl, though she didn't have a lot of money, Joi was happy to help her with expenses for the both of them, "How do you know all of this?" Joi would hold up his lamp at the question each time he was asked it, many strangers called him a genius, his classmates thought he was a supernatural being, it was only during show and tell did his true colors show; "What an interesting lamp!" his teachers chimed together, to which Alice would pop out and introduce themself, despite the look on his teacher's faces, Joi would thank them for not judging him or shooing him away. Many of his classmates continued to talk with him and Alice, even beyond his school years, "Thank you." was all Joi would say to those who became his friends and continued to like him for him, even if it was only a handful of people. Alice would do most of the talking throughout his years of school as Joi would freeze up in front of many crowds, he'd grown so accustomed to Alice that he'd panic if he had to be separated from her during testing, as such, teacher's would allow them near his desk but made sure the lid was closed so they couldn't aid him during the period.
