In her adolescence, Penny lost her mother to the swine flu, and she struggled with bullying in school. She developed her Stand as a result of wanting everybody to leave her alone. Eventually, she was taken in by Joseph Joestar to help her understand her ability, as a favor to her maternal grandfather, who was “an old friend.” Although she remained seclusive and isolated herself in her room, she would communicate with Mr. Joestar via her Stand, Coin Maiden Pleiades. She would deny this, but he slowly became a father figure to her.
