Subtleties is about psychopomps and morality.

Death is very, very busy. Too busy to take the dead, recieve the dead, and do all the paperwork involved. This is where psychopomps come in: people who bring the newly dead to the underworld. They come in many species, and some multitask for multiple species. Psychopomps can See ghosts (of the species they're able to assist), even those long-dead who haven't moved on. This ability often starts in childhood or adolescence, and those who can't See will often just brush off mentions of ghosts. Some are more aware of their 'job' than others, and some might even go their entire lives without knowing what they're actually doing when they help others pass on.

Sascha is young, halfway to seventeen, and she's learned to stop talking about the people she can see that others can't. She grew up concerned, knowing that these people have problems and she can only sometimes help with them. She mostly knows what she's doing, but she's never had a word for it. She's just helping. She finds lost jewelry, lost dogs, secrets she'd rather not have discovered, and that the dead can be very frightening.

There are lots of ghosts around. More than there should be for her little neighborhood.

And then one day, she comes across a ghost she knows she's sent across the line.
