Profile

A genius inventor and creator of the aeronauts, Marlon mostly considers himself just another cyber engineer under the employ of one of many corporations in the Before-Times, although when pressed he will admit that maybe he is a little bit talented. He's grown up knowing the world is coming to an end soon, but even then, it's unnerving seeing and feeling it happen around him.

After a job at a cyber mod parlor, Marlon is on the workforce for A Corporation I Havent Named for only a little while before he meets its ruling tycoon Ikoria face-to-face, taking tours of their domain for "morale." In a strange twist of fate, Ikoria takes a shine to Marlon and his life suddenly changes for the weirder: now he's secretly dating an undercover-rebel-supporter tycoon that encourages (and funds) his wildest dreams. With Ikoria by his side and in his ear, Marlon gets a spectacularly grim view of the world as it is from a higher vantage point, and declares his conscience wont let him live it down if he doesn't do something about this war-ridden, smoggy nightmare that's quickly falling apart.

The aeronaut project begins under Ikoria's gentle prodding, thanks to long, late-night existential discussions and many a brainstorming session. It hurts both of their hearts that nothing they can do now will ever be enough to stop the inevitable apocalypse on the horizon, but maybe, just maybe, they can leave behind a legacy that'll help the next generation. They spin up an entire tiny civilization of cyborgs - born that way, so they never know any different - through fast-paced development and countless hours of work, tests, and dead-ends; a society whose goal is to clean the smog from the sky, so the next world can breathe easier and study the stars sooner.

Marlon dies together with Ikoria to a bomb strike; both of them hoping, praying that what they've done was enough to amount to something. All said, the literal short-lived relationship may have been for the better in the long run, as Ikoria was never the most morally scrupulous person, and had a way of worming into Marlon's head.

Marlon is a driven and surprisingly serious young man. He tends to overthink things and stifles his eccentric ADHD side any time he might possibly be seen as annoying or a know-it-all. He tries very, very hard to seem put-together and on top of his game, but unfortunately for him, he is the type of person to lose his pencil behind his ear and forget he's wearing his workshop gear when he leaves. He spends a lot of time lost in thought, and the looming apocalypse fills him with a desolate feeling of helplessness so he's desperate to do anything to make it seem less so.

Ikoria - sugar daddy partner and "co-creator" of the aeronauts, sort of

he made the airplanes :)

World Context

Preceding the Ash & Dust apocalypse was a time of all-encompassing corporate greed and gross class disparity. North America was overtaken by sprawling industrial urban landscape, kingdoms quite literally ruled by tyrannical business tycoons and every citizen one of their employees. Corporations were the way of life and the only thing they cared about was their wealth: making more, better, faster than everyone else, no matter what the cost of human life nor the impact on the earth around them. The end of the world was clear on the horizon and in the Before-Times, every person grew up knowing it would come to pass during their lifetime.

Despite the dystopia and the looming promise of doom, the Before-Times were rich with technology and prosperous in invention. Cyborg modifications were a healthy, expected commonplace for those who desired it, and at least within the general populace, bodily autonomy and AI ethics reached a comfortable, tolerant peak. (Other fields experienced new heights, but this story is about a robotics engineer.)

Unfortunately, even as the end draws closer, rebellions and protestors against the corporate way of life and all it has wrought have remained ineffective due to their lack of unified front and divided numbers thanks to infighting and meddling. It's too late. The sky is black with smog, wars rumble on the edge of breaking out, and things begin to visibly fall apart around humanity's ears. Their only real solace is that the tycoons and their precious capital will succumb too.

Primary Notes
> cut eyebrows
> delicate white freckles on his face, shoulders, and knees - if his arms were still organic he would have them there too.

> the lenses of his glasses float, suspended by the magnetic implant in his nose - they are not connected
> goggles and pencil are optional; he's just forgetful

Other Things
> tall and slender (a bit over 6ft)
> cybernetics are a mix of gently shined metal, false skin and ceramic

Seems very serious and poised most of the time, though it actually stems from him being a huge nerd with hyperfocus issues and he is mostly a scatterbrain, really. He is very genuine and very, very smart.

He trusts Ikoria far too much and is head-over-heels in love with them. He acts like an equal to Ikoria despite their immense difference in social standing and seems oblivious to how Ikoria actually treats him.
