As a child, Kepler grew up in a traveling clan of tabaxi. The group numbered about 50 tabaxi, with carts and horses, and some other animals. They would go around the world, the group preforming when they needed to for money, but mostly trading curious objects for others. They would mostly travel through small towns, and in some towns were regulars whose arrival would be treated like a carnival, as the tabaxi clan always brought many interesting things with them to trade and were excellent guests. Kepler was happy doing this, and the road became home to them.

When they showed magical talent, the adult tabaxi who knew magic tutored them in magical studies, along with the other young tabaxi who also knew magic. They quickly rose to the top of their class, a grew bored. Kepler read every book on magic possible, and learned all the tricks, but they were eager to do more powerful magic. Summoning fascinated them, and Kepler pushed their teachers to try it. Eventually, it was agreed that they could try summoning a very safe thing. And on a full moon night, under a starry sky in the middle of nowhere, Kepler the other tabaxi with magic began to draw a circle in the ground. It was only supposed to be an imp, the book said. Something perfect for the summoner's apprentice to try, an easy demon to control and defeat if control failed.

What came out of the circle, however, was not an imp.

It was very large, with a face that was almost canine. Its long body has too many limbs and was reminiscent of a horse, though it had claws and feet that could loosely be described as paws. There were eyes and tentacles and a jaw full of teeth that opened into four pieces instead of two. It had stepped through the circle that was supposed to contain it, and launched itself into the tabaxi as the casters began flinging their most powerful spells as the demon. Kepler had raised their hand to cast, then it was on top of them. There was pain in their face, and then the black of a starless void.

When Kepler awoke, their vision was... different. They crawled to a nearby stream to try and wash off the blood they were caked in. The stream was no long clear, but red and thick, with... things... floating in it. Kepler felt sick. They realized that they couldn't see out of their right eye. Kepler got to their feet, and stumbled back to camp, searching for survivors. There were none.

Kepler knew it was their fault.

Kepler was able to make it to the nearest town, and it was luckily one that was frequented by the tabaxi clan. The townsfolk took Kepler in and sent out a search party to make sure there were no survivors. Kepler was able to choke out some sort of confused explanation of what happened to the others. That night, the beast came back. At least, Kepler assumed it was the beast. When they woke up, they were surrounded by destruction and corpses. They checked for survivors, and finding none, realized that they had to move on. They couldn't shake the feeling of being watched, and sometimes thought they saw something moving out of the corner of their eye. They pressed on.

Sometimes the beast would attack and kill those around them. Sometimes it didn't.Over the years, the beast attacked less and less. A few times it even protected Kepler when they were attacked on those lonely roads. Kepler talks to it sometimes, as they rest alone by a fire. The beast, they are aware, is somewhere just out of sight. They think it might be tied to them, but they aren't sure. Kepler is sure that the beast would kill them too, if it could. They wish to kill it, to banish it, to be relieved of the burden of having pure evil dog their footsteps.

Kepler tries to associate with as few people as possible. Those who they do associate, they are aloof and callous with. Kepler figured out long ago that if they care about people, the beast was more likely to attack.
