Personality

From childhood, Roe has been a curious person, especially when it comes to the natural world. When he was young, he was enamoured with nature and spent much of his time playing outside as a toddler and child. As he grew older, he started to adventure further, eventually being allowed into local fields and forests. That love has stayed with him as an adult, and it manifests itself in his natural affinity with animals and plant life. His inquisitiveness has also continued into adulthood. He tends to want to know exactly what's going on and how things work, and it can make him come across as nosy.

As a teenager and young adult, Roe was cocky. At this point, he was arrogant, but as he matured he became more confident and bold than conceited. But from his teenage years and well into adulthood, he has consistently been extroverted, cheeky, flirtatious, and a tease. He likes to play devil's advocate entirely for the sake of winding someone up and starting a debate and will stick to his point even if he disagrees with it. Anyone who knows him understands that all of his cheeky or flirtatious teasings are only playful, but they have got him into countless fights, verbal and physical.

Roe is naturally a charismatic and charming person. He's good at smooth-talking people to get his way but unfortunately for him, he's a terrible liar, so even when he's smooth-talking someone he can only speak the truth. However, most of Roe's charm comes from the fact that he is truly a people person. Because of this, when he smiles, pays attention to what people are saying, and responds with interest, it's usually genuine. He's sincere.

He is positive. His outlook on life is optimistic despite his difficult childhood and lifestyle. He's almost always cheerful and more often than not, there's a spring in his step.

For all of his inquisitive, cocky, charming traits, Roe is a genuinely kind-hearted and warm person. He cares greatly for the people around him, and although he is very good at keeping a cool head he tends to worry too much about his loved ones. This is why he has never wanted to form a gang or even form friends who travel with him for extended periods. He feels that having a lot of people close to him would be disadvantageous to him and also dangerous to them. He tends to dote on the few friends he has. If he finds out that one of them is sick, he will make sure they are well cared for. If someone has personal issues going on, he sits with them and sees if there is something he can do. It isn't unusual for him to extend his concerned attention to strangers who look like they need it.

He is loyal to those who earn it. He stands by his loved ones tirelessly, regardless of what the consequences will be for him.

Roe is fierce in combat. While he is not particularly fast or agile, he is talented with weapons and an experienced brawler. His determination and skill make him a worthy opponent.

However, Roe is stubborn to a fault. As previously mentioned, he often plays devil's advocate and sticks to points even if he doesn't agree with them. Though this is usually playful, he can also be stubborn in serious situations where compromise and leniency would be beneficial and it has led to an innumerable number of fights and arguments.

He can also be painfully clumsy. Though this has not yet been the direct cause of any serious injuries or mistakes in combat, he gets the feeling that it will someday be his death.

Health

Memory: Very good. He often remembers small details that others haven't picked up on

Sight: Roe has always had perfect vision

Mental: When Roe was growing up, Rory and Kirsty had concerns that the lack of proper care and attention - and indeed finding his mother's dead body - would harm his mental health. However, rather than developing any sort of mental illness or even becoming bitter and upset with life, his upbringing and life experiences have taught him to be grateful for what he has and savour the happy moments.

Physical: Roe does not have any sort of set exercise routine but his lifestyle is active and he doesn't bother much with junk foods, candy, etc. so he is very much in shape

Sleep habits: Between three and eight hours per night. This is not down to trouble sleeping, but rather a habit of staying up late. He also loves going for walks at night when the rest of the world is asleep and often returns to his tent only hours before he has to get up. He tosses and turns a lot for the first hour or so, then goes still for the rest of the night. He sleeps on both sides and typically wakes up sprawled on his back or front.

  • Calder (1884 - ): A silver brindle thoroughbred gelding with a black mane and tail who was born in 1884. Calder is a fast steed with good stamina and is not easily frightened by gunfire, though he can be spooked by wildlife, especially cougars and alligators. Despite this, he is unlikely to buck Monroe and is quick to return when whistled. Generally, he is a calm and easygoing horse who loves to run hard. He is roughly sixteen hands from hooves to withers. Roe got Calder in 1886 when he was twenty-one and the horse was two years. At the time he was very excitable but he mellowed out as he matured.

  • George (1866 - 1886): A reverse dapple roan nokota gelding. George was an older horse at twelve years old when Roe received him for his thirteenth birthday in 1878. George was ideal as a young man's first horse; unafraid of gunfire and more likely to stamp on a wolf than run from it, though he was less happy around alligators. Relationships

Parents:

  • Rory Gillespie (1839 - 1880): Roe had a very good relationship with his father despite not seeing him all that much during his childhood. During his adolescent years, however, Roe experienced a time when he felt bitter and neglected due to the lack of attention, but as he grew older he began to understand that Rory always did what he thought was best for Roe, and it was Rory's dedication to his work that gave the family financial stability when they lacked emotional stability. After his father passed, Roe experienced real loss for the first time and it took a long while for it to stop feeling so raw.
  • Elspeth Gillespie (née Campbell) (1843 - 1867): Although Roe doesn't remember much of his mother, he always had an excellent relationship with her. He knows from stories that his father and aunt told him that she always adored him and did everything that she could to make him happy, and he appreciates all of her efforts even if he doesn't remember them. Sometimes during his adolescence, he felt slight anger towards her for leaving him behind at such a young age, but he could never bring himself to truly resent her. Now he accepts that it was never her intention to make him suffer, and he only feels love and gratitude when he thinks about her.

Siblings: None

Grandparents:

  • Callum Gillespie: Callum Gillespie passed away when Roe was eleven years old. He got along very well with his grandfather. Callum visited most weekends, bringing treats with him to share with Roe while they played around in the garden. Callum would enjoy showing a young Roe all the different types of plants and wildlife and was likely to blame for Roe's love for plants and bees.
  • Jennifer Gillespie: Jennifer passed away before Roe was born. He has heard a few stories from his father about her and how funny she was. Roe thinks that she sounded like a wonderful lady, and is especially amused at the thought of her chasing her giggling children to bed with a wooden spoon.
  • Luke Campbell: Luke passed away before Roe was born. However, Kirsty would tell him stories about things that she, her parents, and Elspeth had done together as a young family. Roe thinks that Luke sounds like a stern but kind man.
  • Holly Campbell: Holly passed away before Roe was born. However, Kirsty would tell him stories about things that she, her parents, and Elspeth had done together as a young family. Roe thinks that Holly sounds like a good lady.

Aunts:

  • Kirsty Campbell (1841 - 1877): Kirsty was one of Roe's caretakers as a child, having moved to the United States with her sister and brother-in-law. She looked after Roe when his parents could not and taught him many important lessons that shaped him as he grew up. She was like a second mother and she grew very close to her nephew over the years.
  • Moira Gillespie (1838 - ????): Roe knows very little of his paternal aunt due to her still living in Scotland with her brother. As such, while he knows of his aunt's existence he only met her once when he was a newborn baby. Now he doesn't even know if she is alive.

Uncles:

  • Calen Gillespie (1841 - ????): Similarly to Moira, Roe does not know much of Calen as his uncle is still living in Scotland.

History/Life

Infancy and Childhood (1865 - 1876)

Monroe was born on the 4th of March 1865 in Mallaig, a little village on the west coast of Scotland. His mother, Elspeth, and maternal aunt, Kirsty, were crofters. They mainly grew crops, but also owned a cow who gave them milk which they usually consumed themselves but sometimes sold on as milk or butter. His father, Rory, was a doctor who treated patients in Mallaig and the local area and was widely respected. Rory had grown up in Edinburgh in a fairly wealthy family and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a degree in medicine in the summer of 1860 at the age of twenty-one. In spring 1863, he met twenty-year-old Elspeth Campbell while she was staying in Edinburgh with her father to sell the vegetables they had grown up north, and the two quickly fell in love. When her father returned home, Elspeth stayed with Rory for a few months before they decided to get married and moved up to live with Elspeth's family in the autumn of 1864. On the 21st of February 1866, when Roe was a little under a year old, the family moved over to America in search of greener pastures. They settled in Valentine, New Hanover, where there was a need for a doctor which Rory fulfilled.

The Gillespies formed a neglectful family that meant well. Roe's mother, Elspeth Gillespie, developed postpartum depression after giving birth to him which developed into major depressive disorder. Despite her mental illness, Elspeth was an adoring mother who always tried to do what was best for her son. Even during the days when she couldn't get herself out of bed, she made time for him, allowing the infant to curl by her side until he grew too bored or hungry and scampered off again. She was an excellent cook and she loved to make nice, although simple, dishes for her husband and sister before becoming a parent, but after Roe was born and her depression swamped her, she rarely found the energy to make something substantial. At this point, Kirsty moved in with the Gillespies permanently and took over the cooking, and helped to take care of Roe. However, when Roe started to move on from breast milk at around six months, Elspeth had a newfound determination to provide for her son. For a couple of months, her sole focus was on weaning Roe onto solid foods and giving him the best, most nutritious diet possible. But her mental condition worsened and her determination crumbled with it, and all she was able to make - when she could make herself do anything at all - were quick and easy meals. The most common dish put before Roe by his mother from that point was scrambled egg, which is why he's developed such a love for the food. Otherwise, Kirsty was the one making their meals again.

Rory's job meant that he spent weekdays at his office and was also often called upon or making house calls at weekends. He didn't play much of a part in Roe's early upbringing, but he had a good relationship with his son. He often felt guilty for his lack of presence, but he tried to make up for it in the moments that he could spend with Roe, doing his best to aid his development and teach him to walk and talk.

On the 16th of August 1867, when Roe was only two years old, Elspeth took a knife to her own throat. She did her best to stop Roe from being the one to discover her bloodied body, but in her clouded state of mind all this had meant was closing the bedroom door and hoping that he wouldn't come looking for her before her husband or sister did. Unfortunately, Roe pushed his way into the room before her blood had even dried. He found her body between the bed and the wall and tried multiple times to wake her up before going to notify Kirsty that "Mama fell off the bed and hurt her neck". Before she killed herself she wrote out a short note telling her family that she adored them all and was sorry for being such a hindrance in recent years. Most of all, she wrote that she regretted that she would never get to see Roe grow into the wonderful young man she knew he would become. In the present day, Roe keeps this note in an envelope in his tent.

The time after Elspeth's death was a dark period. Neither of Roe's two remaining guardians knew how to tell the infant that his mother had committed suicide and would never come back, so they simply told him that "she had to go away, but she would always be with him". Being young and naive he accepted this answer without question, though it didn't stop him from asking when she would return every day. This slowly died down to a few times a week, then weekly, fortnightly, monthly until he was four years old and his father finally explained what death was and its permanence. At this point, he was used to Elspeth's absence but he mourned with the new knowledge that he would never see her again.

After losing his wife, Rory temporarily spent less time in his office and left all smaller tasks to a trusted friend to care for his son and sister-in-law and mourn her loss himself. During this time, Rory and Roe's relationship deepened and strengthened considerably. Rory was determined to keep Roe happy so every day he spent time with him whether that meant reading to him, playing with him, or attempting to teach him how to cook. Unfortunately, the older Gillespie was useless in the kitchen and Roe was too young to take any of the valuable advice on board so he didn't learn much, but the pair had fun trying, usually with an amused Kirsty in the background making sure that they didn't set something on fire or hurt themselves.

Only a month after Elspeth's death, Rory's friend had to turn his full attention to his own work so Rory returned to his office as usual. At this point, the family was still mourning but the loss wasn't quite so raw and they were all feeling good about the bonds they held with one another. With Rory returning to the hours he had worked before Elspeth's passing, Kirsty took over as Roe's main caretaker and played a vital role in his upbringing. Though Rory did what he could, Kirsty took most of the responsibility for teaching Roe important lessons such as how to talk properly and get along with others. Cooking, however, was left to his father and the two continued to attempt various recipes on Sunday afternoons. Due to Rory's incompetence in the kitchen, Roe never did acquire the skill, but Kirsty managed to teach him a few basic dishes to get by and taught him how to at least avoid giving himself food poisoning.

On Roe's sixth birthday, Rory gave him his old guitar. After that, the two spent much time practising with Rory teaching his son all of the most simple songs he knew. At first, the guitar was comically big for the small boy, but as he grew up it became easier and he took more of an interest in playing when his father wasn't there. He practised diligently and became more talented until he was twelve when Rory had to admit that he had surpassed him.

At eight, Roe began to develop more independence and started helping his father and aunt out around the house.

His Father's Assistant (1876 - 1880)

On the 19th of July 1876, when Roe was eleven years old, Rory diagnosed Kirsty with tuberculosis. As a doctor, Rory understood that the treatment of tuberculosis in the mid to late 1800s involved fresh air, so the windows in Kirsty's room were always kept open if she was not outside, which was only really when the weather was poor. This is likely why neither Roe nor his father caught the infectious disease from her.

The following spring, on the 24th of March, the disease took Kirty's life and although Roe and his father mourned, Rory was not in a position to take time off work. Because Roe was only twelve at the time, Rory decided to take his son with him to the office and begin training him to be his assistant to keep him occupied, take some of the work off his own shoulders, and avoid leaving his young son home alone. With his friendly and extroverted personality, Roe took well to the job and the patients and clients. Rory was proud of Monroe's aptitude and made this very clear, and also said that he would love to be able to send Roe off to medical school.

On his thirteenth birthday in 1878, Rory gave Monroe his first horse; a twelve-year-old reverse dapple roan nokota gelding whom the boy named George. Rory bought him off another resident of Valentine who was looking to get rid of him, and Monroe immediately fell in love with him. He was a stubborn horse who would snort at anyone who annoyed him and it took a while for him to bond with his owner, but when he did he was very affectionate and fond of Monroe.

Monroe continued to work and grow as Rory's assistant until he was fifteen, and he became enamoured with the idea of working as a real doctor one day, but in autumn 1880 his dreams were shattered. One night, the owner of the general store just down the road from Rory's doctor's office was murdered during a robbery. The following day, on the 29th of September, the local sheriff arrested Rory because an eyewitness claimed that they had seen a man who looked just like the doctor running from the crime scene and the murderer's mask was found in his office the next day.

Roe knew for certain that his father had been at home with him at the time of the murder. When he visited his father in jail, Rory explained that a client had come in and left the mask behind and that he had left it on his desk in case they returned for it, but it must have been left there to frame him because the eyewitness recognised it as the one the murderer was wearing. At Monroe's insistence, Rory gave his son a description of the client who had left it behind.

Monroe went to the law with this information and also explained that his father had been at home with him, but with the clear evidence against Rory and Roe being only fifteen years of age, his attempts to tell the law were brushed off as a child who had been coached to cover for his father. Only four days after he was arrested, on the 3rd of October, Rory was hanged for a murder he did not commit and Roe lost all of his trust for figures of authority. Fifteen-year-old Roe watched his father's execution, and the trauma brought him nightmares for months, and although he still experiences them years later as an adult they are far less frequent. The loss of his father crushed him.

Seeking Revenge (1880 - 1885)

Roe spent the first few days after his father died in a stupor. He didn't feel like he could stay in Valentine because he was now known as the son of a murderer and was outcast by most residents, but he had nowhere else to go. The only individuals who took pity on him were the members of the Davis family - a family that had been friendly with the Gillespies since the Scots moved there. However, even they did not believe him when he explained the truth and he found that he did not want to be in a place where everyone believed what was being said about his family.

On the day he planned to leave Valentine - the 12th of October - he was passing Keane's Saloon when Trevor Albright approached him. The man was the renowned town drunk, an ex-sheriff from Lemoyne who was fired for misconduct and was often called insane, but Roe couldn't help but listen as he spoke the words "I know who did it." The man told him about Carter's Riders, a gang that was based in Lemoyne, and he told him that he caught a glimpse of the men riding away the night of the crime. As they fled, the man recognised Wyatt Carter in the lead. That night, having spent much of the day discussing the gang and their background with Trevor, Roe left Valentine on George with all of his most valuable possessions and money and headed for Lemoyne.

He wandered for a couple of days and eventually arrived in Rhodes in the late evening of the 14th of October where he stayed in the saloon for the night. The next day, he started asking residents of Rhodes about Carter's Riders, focusing mostly on the saloon and the sheriff's office. After a couple of days, he had collated a small wealth of information about the gang, mostly more up-to-date knowledge of their background and the locations they frequented.

During the next two years as he worked on tracking and gathering information on the gang, he took up small jobs including stablehand and general store assistant to get by. His first crime was the theft of a silver cutlery set from a house where he worked as a servant for a while. The family who owned the home delayed his pay time and time again, and when he'd decided he had enough of it he stole the cutlery set as a sort of compensation and ran. From then on, he often stole bits and bobs from the employers who weren't so good to him and went on to take up pickpocketing. When he found he was quite good at it he stopped searching for honest work altogether and focused on his search for the gang. The young, budding outlaw even tried to run a few cons but found that he wasn't quite so good at acting, so he eventually gave that up.

It wasn't until two years after he left Valentine behind, on the 6th of June, that Monroe finally confronted and killed the first member of the gang. The man was no longer part of Carter's Riders but had been present that night in Valentine. Monroe kept him alive for a short time in an attempt to draw more information about the current whereabouts of the gang members but when he proved to be happier to laugh at and threaten the boy than help him, Monroe buried a bullet in his face. This was Monroe's first time murdering someone, and even though the man was one of those he'd been tracking down for years he couldn't help but feel sick at the knowledge that he'd taken a life. However, this feeling was short-lived as he remembered what he - and likely countless others - had suffered a the hands of Carter's Riders. Over the next three years, he tracked down and killed the rest of the members of Carter's Riders, saving the leader for last.

On the 3rd of October, exactly five years after his father was hanged, Monroe killed the final member of Carter's Riders with a knife to the chest in Roanoke Ridge. However, Wyatt Carter was a mean, dirty, snarling man who had given twenty-year-old Monroe, who by then was experienced enough with brawling and murder to put up a fight, a run for his money. The young man came away from the fight feeling satisfied, emotional that he'd finally avenged his father and altogether torn up. Aside from his various physical injuries, Monroe had no idea where to go or what to do with his life but he did not have long to dwell on it before a thunderstorm rolled in. He took up refuge in a cave just south of Butcher's Creek.

Moving On (1885 - )

After riding for what felt like years but could only have been minutes, Monroe fell from the saddle, unconscious. Monroe woke the next day on a comfortable bed, cleaned up and bandaged.
