overview

kanna is... complicated, and that's a great way to sum him up. he has friends and people that he would risk his life for- and he's extremely self-sacrificial to the point of concern- but he also masks himself hard and presents to the world as an apathetic, non-caring person. to truly understand him, you have to be him, but no one else can really do that. not even kanna can handle being in his own head sometimes.

about

Most people would see Kanna as... apathetic. It's not innacurate, because that is how he has always presented himself, outwardly at least. He works very hard on being able to maintain a disinterested look, when it comes to most things and interactions with others. He's actually quite emotional, and this shows only occasionally. When he's being more true to his emotions, he can be excitable and loud, and honestly, a little overwhelming. This typically only comes out with someone he trusts a lot, or when he's interacting with younger people, since he knows he can't put his Struggles from a Disapproving World on them.

Kanna has ADHD, and this manifests in hyperfixating on little projects, always having something in his hands, and a lot of sensory overload. He typically brings a pocket watch and little kit with him most places he goes, so he can sit and take it apart and put it back together if he's getting antsy. He's really sensitive to sounds, and physical touches, so he spends a good amount of time listening to music, or at least, having some headphones nearby. For touches, it mostly happens with his hands and feet, so he keeps them as 'clean' as possible, especially his hands. That's actually why he wears his fingerless gloves! They keep his palms protected, while leaving his fingers open so that he can work without feeling the fabric shifting against them and being upsetting.

Kanna also has a sad habit of self destructive behavior. He doesn't view himself as... normal. Not in an edgy 'its not a phase' way, but in a genuine way where he feels closer to the machinery he works with than to the rest of his species. He finds it easier to relate to robotics, because they have so many set things- though he knows that he has blood and a beating heart like everyone else. The destructive part of him is strongest when he's alone, resorting to various methods of hurt in order to 'feel something'. He's under the impression that unless he's feeling something, he doesn't exist. He often looses himself in reality, and spaces out in his workshop for hours with no idea where or who he is. This is typically only remedied by a visit from a friend, or when the sun sets/rises and the temperature changes.

He is also deathly terrified of the ocean! Once he is set in a routine, he finds it extremely hard to break from it to do something easier/better for him. (like continiously re-bleaching the top half of his hair, instead of just dying it all natural of bleaching all of it) He's got a LOT of book smarts, but is practically completely empty in the 'street smarts' department. He does NOT understand social interaction whatsoever.

It's been nearly fifteen years since Dax's death and his breakup with Westol, and Kanna has adjusted to living mostly alone in his house, and having to take care of himself, and also being absolutely hopelessly in love with his friend, despite knowing it'll never work out again.

He spends most of his days shuffling around his house, using a written spell to teleport around when he's too lazy to really move far on his feet. He keeps himself alive, just enough to function. If his siblings come over to visit, he cleans up, and tries to be normal- but its not exactly easy. He knows that they know it too, and no one really talks about how he's doing outside of reminding him that he's gonna need more groceries soon. It's tense in Kanna's household, but he doesn't really care that much.

When he's outside, its for one of three reasons. Larania or Rodi taking him somewhere, Muffy or Lelyah wanting him around, or Westol. It always, always comes back to Westol. Kanna knows better- he knows that the ship has sailed and hit an island and made the island's volcano erupt all over the poor ship, killing everyone inside- but he still holds out hope for a few survivors to drive that boat back home like a hero. He knows he shouldn't.

But when Westol comes to pick him up, and smiles at him, all big and happy and genuine, Kanna's heart feels like its been dropped in that same lava- and the fire starts blazing once again.

He works from home as a mechanic, doing things out of his garage. He tried to get a job somewhere normal, with a real shop, but he hates when strangers try and talk about his uncle. Even when it came to working with cars and machinery, people would rather hear what brand of coffee pot the Dax Storm used, than have a normal conversation. He was expecting his uncle's fame to slowly fizzle out, but it seems plenty of people are still avid fans- not that he can blame them.

He never really stopped being a fan either. Sometimes, when he's really, really bad. On nights where he doesn't know if he'll let himself see tomorrow, he'll search through the shelves and find a movie- screening copy or otherwise. He'll set himself up on the couch, piling half the pillows beside him to mimic the other space being filled, and he'll watch through the movie alone, still pausing to try and laugh at Dax's silly face, or watching really close at a scene for the trip, or just closing his eyes, turning up the volume, and listening to the familiar voice fill the living room, pretending that there was never a time it wasn't there. On those nights, he'll open up the door to his uncle's room, and sit on the bed, looking around at all the things he hasn't ever changed, hasn't touched, and he'll lay there, and fall asleep with ice-cold tears drying on his cheeks.

Kanna grew up fairly alone. His father was a complete mystery, and his mother Clara had disappeared shortly after his birth- so, instead, he was put in custody of his uncle, Dax Luholt- or, as the public knew him, Dax Storm. A practical hyper-celebrity, who was always pretty busy with his work due to demand. Kanna didn't mind not really having anyone around- he learned to take care of himself as soon as he could, but this meant that he didn't really socialize with others.

Whenever Dax would come home, Kanna would eagerly listen to the new and exciting stories he'd brought back to tell of his recent work. These exciting stories lead to Kanna absolutely idolizing his uncle, thinking he was just about the coolest and best person in the whole world. He always looked forward to whenever Dax came home. Sometimes, Dax would bring the screening copy of a movie, and they'd watch it together, making fun of any time Dax made a silly face. (Kanna's favorite moments were when Dax would pause, rewind, and tell Kanna how many times he tripped over a specific object in the background- or how hard a line was to say- it made his idol of an uncle feel human, too.)

In school, Kanna had practically perfect grades. He spent more time studying than much else, and didn't really make many friends. A few came and went- with only three really staying around long, but one in particular seemed even more important, Westol. Kanna's favorite person in the whole wide world, who he loved dearly. He told Westol this often, and his beloved would always laugh it off. It was seen as something less than the romantic ideal, but Kanna didn't mind that much- he just really wanted Westol to be and feel loved. Even if it wasn't in the same way, all the time. This back and forth of confession and laugh-off continued well until they were in their late teens, when Westol finally agreed to date him.

For Kanna, a lot happened all at once.

Kanna had been happy in the relationship, and Westol seemed to be as well- but after an invitation to share a shower one night, Westol seemed to just... disappear. Kanna didn't know what he did wrong, but he was positive that it was his fault- that he'd made a mistake. He'd driven away the most important person he'd ever met, just like that. He couldn't get ahold of Westol at all, and started sinking into a depression.

Then there was an accident at the studio, and Dax never came home. Kanna was mourning alone, leaving his friends behind as well and locking himself away. He filed for emancipation to keep living in his uncle's home and not be fostered out until he became an adult. After a few forced interviews with news stations, he spent a long, long time upset, crying, refusing contact and letting life eat away at him. No one could get through, until Westol used a spare key to walk right back into his life out of nowhere. But Kanna wasn't entirely conscious for that- he was weak and needed help.

When Kanna woke up in the hospital, he was upset. Westol was sitting there, and seemed to be angry at him as well. Something about Kanna not taking care of himself, about how he was responsible and should've asked for help- about how he should have had Dax come home when he got that bad. Kanna was absolutely heartbroken. Tears instantly found themselves in his eyes, and he couldn't keep them back as he told Westol to leave. He was hurt. He was abandoned- he almost died. He wished Westol never would've came back, so he could have just died there. He didn't want to be together anymore- not like this. He broke up with Westol, and it only hurt more to see that obvious relief wash over his favorite person's form.

Before Westol left that day, they agreed that they could still be friends. Kanna knew that he couldn't just completely shut Westol out of his life- not with how bad he'd been for a near decade just being near this boy. It hurt, but it was better than nothing. It was better then dating, and that leading to the worst months of his entire life.

relationships

Westol Smith.

a mistake he's still fixing...

kanna knows that westol is his soulmate- there's no one else in the world who could ever make him feel so... normal. so right. but it didn't work- and he knows it not going to work- but he keeps hoping. he keeps trying. their friendship feels wrong now, and everything along with it, but he refuses to give up. there's no way he could let the most important person he's ever met just hide away and leave his life. there's nothing healthy about the way he chases after westol-- but... he keeps praying and begging any gods who will listen.

he would do anything for westol.

Larania Touchester.

a savior of a sister.

while kanna was initially nervous about their families joining together; the siblings he got out of it were worth more than anything. he trusts his sister with everything, and would do anything she asked, should she ask it. even if they get in little mock-fights, he knows that lala will be there for him, and hopes that she knows that he'd drop anything to help her.

he knows that he hasn't been the best brother since... everything happened, but he's trying, little by little, to get better. he's sorry.

Muffy Bleuet.

concerned mother friend.

neither of these two really expected to get so close, but it was bound to happen. muffy brings him snacks when he's sad, and he helps her fix broken machines around the bakery- but that's a really surface level thing. in reality, they're good at sharing quiet feelings, leaning on each other and silently doing their own thing, but knowing exactly what the other is thinking.

muffy knows exactly when to tell him to stop overthinking, and he knows when to tell her to put something down before she gets mad at it. its very mutually beneficial for them.

Rodi Luholt

beloved little brother.

when rodi was first born, kanna was NOT excited. he didn't want to deal with a baby running around, and sure, rodi may have been a little difficult to adjust for- but it didn't take long before kanna looked at his stupid little face and realized that he wanted to be the best big brother he could be.

as rodi has been growing up, they've only gotten closer, and kanna whirlwinds around the house to clean up any remnants of his latest breakdowns whenever he learns that his brother is coming over, because seeing rodi always makes him happy.

Lelyah Romanova

workout buddy, motivator.

the worst thing kanna ever did was give her a key to his house- that's a joke, but when she shows up in the middle of the night to go work out, he can't help but complain a little bit. even if he loves the night air and the way it makes his muscles scream. she's loud and a little silly, but he honestly really loves having her a friend, and without her he's sure that he would've stopped keeping himself fit when everything happened. its tense and he knows that she's not great with his silent days, but he's trying to be better about being clear as can be for her.

Dax Luholt

dad. uncle, whatever.

dax was kanna's guardian, and the man who taught him how to live. dax always seemed to do everything right, and kanna would do anything to be half the kind of person that dax was- but he knows he never will be. he doesn't have that same appeal, the friendliness. but that's fine, because even if he can't be dax, he can remember what dax told him, and be a better version of himself- even if it takes a million tries.

he smiles to himself, every day, just like dax.
it helps.
