family notes

• latonya's mother and stepfather live in the city, her father lives near the edge of it approaching the suburbs (closer to her own apartment). after their divorce when she was young they had 50/50 custody and did a pretty good job co-parenting
• darius lives with her mother and stepfather, his parents; he's her half-brother but she doesn't use qualifiers
• latonya herself is adopted; she was told when she was very young and so it's just normal for her

• Sewing: Latonya isn't so skilled as to make anything from scratch, but knows how to operate a sewing machine and can mend most damages in clothing and fabric.

Family

Darius Louis

Her younger brother; he's nineteen, seven years younger than her. Though technically her half-brother, kind of (being the biological kid of her adopted mother and her adopted mother's husband), they don't put qualifiers on it. He attends university in the city, and lives with his parents, Ayanna and Stefan, in the meantime. They have a friendly sibling relationship that includes plenty of teasing, but also a lot of her doting on him and embarrassing him. Still, their trust in each other is absolute.

Ayanna Louis

Latonya's mother. She lives with her husband, Stefan, and Darius in the center of the city. While Ayanna and Latonya love each other deeply, and Latonya trusts her mother entirely, Ayanna has a tendency to be overbearing, so the distance put between them by Latonya's moving into her own apartment has improved their relationship.

Stefan Louis

Latonya's mother's husband, and Latonya's stepfather. He's also Darius's father. A shaky start to their relationship as children has left their adult relationship slightly more distant. Nonetheless, Latonya acknowledges him as a good husband for her mother and a good father for her brother, and bears him no ill will, and even if they aren't especially close, they're friendly.

Kiante Solomon

Latonya's father. He lives far enough from the central city that he's practically suburban, and is therefore closer to Latonya's own apartment. As such, she sees him often. Studious and shy, he works as a teacher at the local high school. Though they have few in the way of shared interests, Kiante always tries to show enthusiasm and involvement in whatever Latonya is doing. They have a close relationship, and Kiante is generally the first person Latonya goes to when she needs guidance.

Ibrahim el-Firman

Latonya's father's boyfriend. Gregarious and social, he easily won Latonya's approval with his kind personality and love for both gardening and, of course, her father. They have a friendly relationship, and Latonya is expecting to see a proposal any day now.

• Her western zodiac sign is Leo.
• Her design incorporates aspects of her two associated arcana, Strength and Sun, as they appear in the Rider-Waite tarot.
  • Her style of headband is sometimes called an infinity headband, like the infinity sign over the figure over Strength's head.
  • The figure in Strength wears chains of flowers around her head and her waist; Latonya's headband is floral patterned, and she wears a flower belt.
  • The Sun card has five sunflowers; Latonya has two sunflower earrings, a sunflower belly button piercing, a sunflower tied to her shoe, and a sunflower tattoo on her hip.
• Her first tattoo was the outline of the lion on her thigh, which she later got colored. As soon as she turned eighteen, she asked her younger brother, then eleven, what she should get; he answered a lion because it's his favorite animal.
• As a rule, she doesn't put too much thought into her tattoos beyond what she thinks is pretty. The body is a canvas to her, and she's excited to make art on it!
• She got the falcon tattoo on her neck after successfully rehabilitating a falcon no one expected to survive because it was so cruel to its caretakers and difficult to treat as a result. At no point leading up to its release back into the wild, of course, did the bird become any more appreciative of its care, but Latonya considers her spearheading the work to help it one of her greatest successes.
• She had a brief Love Live phase after her brother got really into it. She didn't stick with it, but still knows most of the songs pretty well, if only because Darius is still a fan.
• She's dangerously close to being able to be described as granola. She's one of those people who always has a reusable shopping bag on-hand, shops small local businesses almost exclusively, and is overly cautious about her own environmental footprint.
• She loves flowers, and makes minimum weekly purchases from a particular local flower shop. Sometimes they're surprises for her loved ones, and other times she just wants something pretty to put on her table. In general, Latonya is a pretty big proponent of making one's own occasions.
