About
Lufian smirks with the fearless cockiness of someone who has nothing to lose, meeting death and safety alike unflinchingly. Having lived rough for most of his life, he is entirely unfussy and easy to please — however this won't stop him from complaining and making a fuss for the sheer sake of being difficult.
Despite his general penchant for testing people's patience and creating as much chaos as he can manage, Lufi is intensely loyal and will sacrifice everything for the sake of those he loves.
Backstory
Orphaned from a young age, Lufi was predominantly raised by his elder sister, Laia. Any remaining memories of his parents have long since grown hazy and distant; Lufi regards Laia as the only family he's ever known. Despite his sister's best efforts, life was hard — although they kept the house their father had built, it gradually became emptier as Laia desperately sold more belongings and furniture to make ends meet. Even still, food was scarce and the house eventually fell into disrepair.
His childhood wasn't wholly bleak, however; his sister was caring and attentive, lovingly teaching Lufi how to read and write and cook when she had time to spare. Every weekend, Granny Faloden from a few doors down the road would gift them fresh fruit and a homebaked pie. As Lufi grew older he sought his own amusement in the form of thievery and charming manipulation — eagerly surprising Laia with his hauls when she returned from work. After some stern talks Laia didn't entirely dissuade Lufi from his thieving ways, but at least convinced him to divert some of his time to hunting for meat. It took some practice — beginning with Lufi pestering and persuading the village hunters to share their knowledge and following with the better part of a year's trial and error — but come the age of 14 Lufi was a rather adept hunter.
It was this skill (and Laia's persistence and resourcefulness) that landed Lufi the job of being a cattle herder, watching over the farm animals at night and warding off any would-be predators. Except for the occasional disaster, Lufi was excellent at his job and with two incomes the siblings finally reached the financial stability needed for comfortable living. Although they each worked night and day, at dawn and dusk they made sure to spend some time together, with the one just waking fixing a meal for the other before they headed to bed.
That is, until the day Laia left for work one morning and didn't return. It was not wholly unusual for Laia to work overtime, staying late at the apothecary to sort stock or tidy up, so Lufi didn't question it until the following dawn. Upon returning to an empty home, it became horribly clear that something was amiss. Forgoing sleep in favour of searching all across town for his sister, Lufi eventually found her — slumped in an alleyway and drained of blood.
Suddenly the folktales and rumourmongering of the young Lord Cain sequestered away in his lavish estate overlooking the town being a vampire no longer seemed so absurd. A week later, with his grief hardened into murderous resolve and an assortment of anti-vampire tools at his side, he set out for the Lord Cain's mansion.
Trivia
- Beyond his necklace having a cross, it is also made of silver, hence being doubly vampire repelling.
- Being most accustomed to working through the night and sleeping during the day, Lufi sleeps best when lying in the sun. Unfortunately, this habit often leads to him being sunburnt.
- Lufi can make an exceptionally tasty butternut squash soup.
- Having been somewhat deprived of food during his childhood, Lufi eats extremely fast and finishes everything on his plate, regardless of whether he enjoys the food or not. Also, he can (and will) talk about food for hours.
Relationships
Laia
sister
Growing up in poverty with noone but each other made Laia and Lufi as close as siblings could be. Although he begrudged her mothering and lecturing, and made a show of tolerating her gestures of affection, Lufi always admired her and loved her deeply.
Lufi's greatest regret is never telling her how grateful he is for all she did.
Cain
partner
Cain is Lufi's partner in both love and business; Lufi's initial plan to enact revenge upon the vampire that killed his sister was firmly derailed upon realising that things are not so black and white as he first assumed. Offering himself as Cain's blood consort so that no more need die to feed him, the two formed a strong — if unexpected — bond.
Sharing a dislike for vampires, the two set out to hunt down those of Cain's kind, to either share their knowledge of a more ethical way to feed or dispatching those that cannot be reasoned with. The more they travel together, the more fond of each other they become.
