⇀ TL;DR

Wandering ex-major general who was a major component in her people's successful revolution. In doing so she managed to get her best friends killed, which she feels really, really bad about, and also lost a few body parts which she feels just a bit less bad about. Instead of staying home and soaking up all of the glory, she decided to go travelling in an attempt at repressing all of that sweet sweet war trauma, and it sorta seems to be working since she's spends most of her time not being obviously bummed out. Super hard to kill because when she gets hurt, flowers grow out of her wounds in a weirdly effective clotting mechanism. Usually pretty elegant, but will prank you if it's funny.

⇀ Overview

Maeve is a woman who laughs very little, yet seems to perpetually be in very good spirits.

It's a bit odd, because at first glance, it seems like she doesn't have very much to be happy about. War left her missing an arm, an eye, and quite a lot of friends, and though she gave so much for her country, something in her couldn't bear to stay after her term as a major-general helped it secure its independence from foreign rule. It wasn't that she was treated badly; she was a war hero! Honored and respected, with legends told about her deeds. Nor was it that she bore the government ill will for anything that transpired during the campaign; she genuinely seems to remain fond of the land of her birth. It just...

Hurt to be there, after everything, and so she left with some savings, a small pack of supplies, and the clothes on her back.

She's a modest traveler, neither spending much money nor getting into much trouble. She expresses interest in the lands she visits, sees their important landmarks, and speaks with the people around her in a personable - though often teasing - manner, but she makes few friends and seems disinclined to linger in any one place for particularly long. Though she's curious, she's not particularly driven to acquire information about anything specific. Her days are spent in a laid-back, relaxed manner, and despite being a former high-ranking military official, Maeve is profoundly humble. She does not brag, often underselling her own accomplishments, and she is almost impossible to rile up, responding to most taunts, threats, and displays of arrogance with amusement. Yet, somewhat at odds with this very accepting, laid-back personality, Maeve hates to lose. She expects nothing less than the best from herself, and when she makes things a competition, she gives it her all. This is a remnant from her fiery-spirited childhood, and though she's mellowed out substantially as an adult... there's still something left of that determined woman who clawed tooth and nail up the ranks of the military until her ambition had landed her a position of high esteem.

That's not to say that there's nothing tragic about her situation, or that she feels no grief. Many of her friends have left this world before her, and the memories of war so tainted her homeland that she couldn't convince herself to remain. Deep doubts about her life and actions plague her, but instead of indulging them, she keeps them concealed under a modest bearing. Empty wishes can't change the past, after all, and death hates nothing more than a smile. She'd rather not give him the satisfaction of seeing her break.

Top Moe Trait || Sticks her tongue out just a little bit when she's focusing very hard on something.

Maeve's heart-shaped face is framed by a bob of royal purple hair which curls in around her chin. Her eyes, a deep forest green which matches her raised collar, are downturned, and above them are strange, pale yellow eyebrows in the teardrop shape common in her race. Though - perhaps it would be better to say above her eye instead, as her left eye was the causality of an explosion that occurred near the end of Maeve's career as a major general. Due to a quirk of her species, sweet smelling rose grows in the empty socket, framed by green leaves. Two prominent scars lead up to the injury, though Floribunda scar with woody tissue and petals that match the color of their birth flower - in Maeve's case, pale pink. Another line of petals cuts across Maeve's opposite cheek, curving around to end before it hits her leporine mouth. Like Maeve's eyebrows, her rabbit-like nose is a splotch of yellow. A nutty-brown layer of fur covers the majority of her skin, making it soft to the touch, though its shortness and density make it seem smooth from a distance. Her ears stand up straight, and like all Floribunda, flowers bloom out of them - dusty rose blooms framed by deep purple purple for Maeve. On the outside, they're covered by soft, cream fur, which matches the color - though not the texture - of the thicker fluff on her legs, abdomen, and forearms.

For a woman, Maeve is tall...ish, standing at about 5'8. This is average for her race, though when she was a general, she had a reputation for composing herself in a way that made her seem much taller than she really was. In the present day though, Maeve doesn't feel the need to stand at rigid, militant attention, and while she doesn't ever appear lazy or slouched, she lets her shoulders slope naturally and her arms hang loosely at her sides. As is customary in Floribunda society, Maeve reveals the scars on her body with pride, most notably the heavy growths on her left arm and the complete amputation of her right. Flowers grow in place of the stump, a cluster of roses similar to a bouquet. Around Maeve's neck is a series of brown cords which are attacked to a pale-yellow, rose shaped pendant made of out the clay. By the way she treats it, it seems to be a memento of some kind.

Normally, she has a an easy-going smile on her face, though her expression will turn mischievous at the drop of a hat when she finds someone she feels like teasing. Her body language often conveys elegance, though not arrogance, as she's mild-mannered and very humble. She doesn't mind getting dirty if she needs to do so to get the job done, and she's never been one to shy away from hard labor. Because of this, she has some musculature to her arms, abdomen, and legs - her thighs in particular are intimidating to say the least. Shape-wise, though, they're more human-like than rabbit, and like a humanoid, she has fingers and opposable thumbs.

⇀ Important Notes

  • Floribunda eyebrows have a distinctive teardrop shape, and Maeve's are yellow, along with her nose.
  • Her left eye is missing, and her right arm is missing. Both are replaced by roses.
  • She has flowers in her ears - pale pink roses bordered by purple petals.
  • Maeve has lines of floral scarring on both cheeks and on her left arm.

Background

⇀ Floribunda

Floribunda are a species of humanoid rabbits born with a very particular tie to nature. They surround themselves with it, leaving plenty of room for floral growth in their cities, and when Floribunda are injured, flowers bloom from their wounds and form a vegetative scar tissue that aids in their recovery. This makes them a particularly hardy species, allowing them to survive wounds that would kill other creatures, and it also gives them a resistance to the effects of aging... though not a complete immunity. While much of their life is spent in their prime and they don't acquire many degenerative diseases, Floribunda are by no means immortal, though they do live quite a long time and able to survive to be as old as four-hundred before their bodies give out from stress. This makes Floribunda a fierce foe to confront in battle, despite their gentle appearance, though - amusingly enough, for a race of rabbit-people - their difficulties with procreation make it almost impossible for them to sustain long wars due to a lack of potential combatants.

Each Floribunda is associated with a particular species of flower, which forms a 'clan' of sorts in Florin society. All rose-type Floribunda belong to the Rosa clan, all lily-type Floribunda belong to the Lilium clan, etcetera, and these 'floritypes' are passed from parent to child though, in rare cases, a unique flower is formed through combined traits of the parent generation. This is seen as a blessing, though it can be isolating for the Florin child, as they have no clan to associate themselves with and instead they must form their own associations and groupings. Often, these children take on the clan-name of 'Wildflower', and associate themselves with other wildflowers. Some Wildflowers start clans of their own, and seek out other Floribunda with flowers similar to their own to create a more definitive bloodline.

Overall, Floribunda society is a relaxed one. The governmental structure is a theocracy, with positions of political power being held by the clergy and the king also being the leader of the church, but its practices are rooted in druidism and the Florin god is literally just a giant tree. Its tenets are normal enough, centered around treating the environment with respect and eating psychoactive fruit to get divine visions, and church officials often act as counselors and festival leaders One quirk of the Florin religion is that all marriages must be blessed by the Divine Tree. It's difficult to tell what, exactly, merits a blessing, but if a couple makes a pilgrimage to the tree and a flower don't bloom for them when they perform the courtship ritual, they're not allowed to marry and must make another pilgrimage the next year. This can be a very daunting task, and it's not unheard of for couples to run away away together and elope.

When Floribunda die, they are buried in the earth, and the decomposition process makes the soil around their bodies incredibly fertile. It's common for every family to have a 'family graveyard', and each generation tends the flowers that grow from the bodies of prior generations.

⇀ Abilities

Like all members of her species, the flowers that Maeve grows from her injuries serve to make her body stronger. This makes her incredibly hard to kill, as instead of bleeding out, her floral body stymies the flow from her wounds and keeps her... together. As a combatant, Maeve - coming from a military family - is particularly skilled, as she's been trained in the arts of war and swordplay since she was a child. Having been educated in strategy, history, and public speaking, Maeve is as valuable an asset in the war-room as she is commanding a battlefield. She's well-read, well-spoken, and well-versed in various forms of literature and poetry, and she's mentally very sharp, being as quick a thinker as she is quick on her feet. She enjoys competitive games, and while she's taken a substantial hit to her ability to participate in athletics due to the loss of her arm, she's determined enough to not let that impact her ability to have fun. While she can't pull off all the feats she used to, she makes do with some ingenuity and creative thinking.

⇀ Flaws

Maeve left behind a lot of people who cared for her a lot.

Family. Friends. A country that appreciated her and that could have, quite honestly, used her help in the post-war reconstruction period. But despite Maeve's apparent good humor, the weight of the choices she had to make during the campaign burden her, and she finds herself hard-pressed to try to settle down and rebuild her life, because doing so is a reminder that she had a place she belonged, and now it is gone. This makes her... unreliable as a person, and it's bad to get attached to her as she's little inclined to remain in one place for long. She doesn't want to get terribly close to other people, because she's felt the pain of having the people she cares for die around her while she can do nothing. She also doesn't want others to see her as weak, and she's afraid that if she becomes too close to anyone, they'll notice all of the things she tries to hide - like how tense loud noises make her, along with how restlessly she sleeps at night.

Maeve is also a bit... petty and competitive. She doesn't often let herself get riled up, but when she does, she can get far too into things and forget herself - which can lead to her angering people she shouldn't really be trifling with. She also doesn't have much respect for bureaucrats, especially foreign ones - in fact, she still is very patriotic, and even though she's travelling and experiencing new places, she still thinks 'home' is better. In fact, she views her country as being incapable of doing wrong, and this has the potential of making her frustrating to deal with when it comes to discussions about the downsides of Florin society.

⇀ Trivia

  • While she has her share of Horrible War Stories, she can also tell a lot of funny ones, too.
  • She gets restless if she doesn't exercise enough. She accomplishes this through running, doing 'one-arm friendly' exercises, and by sparring with people on her travels. She's actually surprisingly good at swordplay despite her limb loss, though she's hardly at her prime.
  • She smells really, really nice.
  • Cute things appeal to her more than she likes to admit.
  • She has two different sorts of fur - the very fine, short fur covering her skin, and the fluffy, long fur on her abdomen, legs, and forearms.
