ABOUT

"Isn't it fair? I want to borrow from you, and so you may borrow from me."

The fae are a people bound by rules and laws. While they may be wild and bloodthirsty from a human perspective, their need for a level of order is absolute in their own lands. The magic they wield, centered around identity and truth, is therefore beholden to a very important loophole: a creature with no name is at a distinct advantage in power, but is socially a pariah. But where The Insect King Hyacinth accepts this trait of himself and has no desire to seek out a "true" name, the creature known as Dandelion resents not having what the rest of his people have. And now that Hyacinth is gone, living a combined life with some human boy and unable to be found, it's a lonely existence, indeed.

Dandelion seeks out human beings and, in exchange for a share of his power, they lend him their lives, their identities. But in order to maintain his power, he leaches from their bodies, consuming them from the inside. And so their borrowed name and identity dies too, and he seeks out another. So this continues, seemingly endlessly, until he can be stopped. Living as a changeling is not unique to Dandelion, and is in fact common among the fae, but none seem to do it so obsessively or with so little time in between.

PERSONALITY

Like many other faeries, Dandelion's behaviors and feelings tend to be different from those of human beings. Merriment is not necessarily happiness and melancholy is not necessarily sadness. He feels deeply and cares very much about the context and meaning of things, and if he understands a narrative to be occurring, he does not enjoy that narrative being defied. Matching sets must not be broken up, and promises must not be broken.

But unlike others, Dandelion doesn't need to be well-liked. As long as his affections for others are returned proportionately, he's perfectly happy, and he only cares about a few people at a time. Friendship, family, and community are not things he's had much luxury of in the thousands of years that he's lived, and they largely feel foreign to him when he does have them.

APPEARANCE

A very tall and strongly-built young man with fluffy white hair and delicate features. He has very long legs and surprisingly slender (though rough) fingers for how muscled he is.

DESIGN

  • Very pastel-heavy design to be a counterpoint for Marcel
  • Lightly spider-themed
  • Naturally white hair and eyelashes
  • Makes most of his own clothes
  • Despite pretty face, his arms are extremely strong and his hands are rough from years of skilled manual work
  • Teeth are normal size but slightly sharper than average
  • Fluffy wavy hair mean it never looks quite the same day-to-day
  • Very vain, usually dislikes having scars or freckles or wearing glasses. Hyacinth always used to tease him for this.
  • Height: 6'3" (190 cm)
  • Weight: 225 lbs (102 kg)

ABILITIES

SPIDER FORM

The Children of the Forest each have their own affinities for its creatures. Dandelion's familiar creature is the spider, which wove the clouds he was borne from. He is bigger and stronger in spider monster form, with a hard carapace and sharp, venomous fangs.

SHAPESHIFTING

All faeries can change shape to some degree, and Dandelion is no exception. While not quite as effortlessly flexible with it as Hyacinth, he can alter his face, build, and voice with no problem.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Dandelion can easily weave things out of ordinary materials, from mundane things like fabric to more abstract and obviously magical things like clouds. Most raw materials can be made into something or another, if he sets some time and effort to it.

BACKGROUND

PAST

The Faerie Queen, the Lord of the Forests, did not need to take a lover to create children. She did so only out of love, and so sometimes she did. As her domain grew, her forest's trees grew tall, and brought life and water into the domain of the Lord of the Clouds, and the two of them fell in love.

So around the time the Queen's first son appeared, the Lord of the Clouds, now Prince Regent, had a child of his own. Neither child was given a true name, and the two of them lived together in the Queen's forest. They gave themselves nicknames to use, but while this was good enough for Hyacinth, Dandelion always resented that as more faeries appeared, they never really knew what to do with him. He had power, yes, but no real identity of his own. Still, as long as he had Hyacinth, his other half, his best friend and lover and not-quite-twin, he knew he'd be okay.

But as Hyacinth's eyes wandered to human beings and their world, he was around less and less, though he and Dandelion always found each other when one or both of them possessed a human as a changeling. But one day Hyacinth was gone, really gone. The magical signature that would make him unmistakeable was nowhere to be seen, and no matter how he searched, Dandelion suddenly realized in a panic that he was not only nameles, but alone.

Confronting the Lord of the Forest about why he'd never been named, she replied that he'd never been meant to have one. He flew into a rage and burned down her forest, and as her domain was destroyed, so was she, leaving behind only her crown set in petrified wood, to be taken by the right person at the right time.

PRESENT

Dandelion continues to search for his friend, and having finally found what has become of him, he struggles to understand what to make of his situation. Fusion with a human consciousness isn't something anybody else has attempted before, and although Marcel has Hyacnth's soul, he isn't the same.

ON THE GREY

Dandelion can't bear being nameless and without his companion for much longer. He seeks Hyacinth out, and when he finds Marcel instead, Dandelion realizes he has to right the terrible wrong he's done.

RELATIONSHIPS

The other Nameless Child, and as far as Dandelion is concerned, his other half. Raised together throughout childhood, they were constant companions for centuries, even sharing dozens upon dozens of stolen human lives with each other. They aren't brothers, not really, and they aren't really always lovers. They aren't even always friends. But whether friend or enemy, whether their relationship is familial or filial, they are a pair, and Dandelion is certain they belong together.

This boy is strange in a way that feels wrong. But something about him is familiar and comforting. Dandelion doesn't fully comprehend what happened to his friend, but Marcel isn't really the worst person to have around instead. And considering what's happened, he's owed something that now can only be Dandelion's to give.

A peculiar human boy. Dandelion doesn't care to deny that he feels a bit of fondness for Jérome. He's a kindred spirit, of sorts. An artist with a rebellious heart who loves so, so deeply... It's a shame he gets in the way rather too much.

She wasn't really his mother, but Dandelion, like the other Children of the Forest, looked up to her as one all the same. It was a childish moment of weakness that made him destroy her, and he aches for a way to redeem himself.
