Amelia is an Evolt - her shift involves the degree of her various parentage being evident. For example, when feeling aggressive or defensive, her horn grows longer, and her partial wings and fins shrink. Amelia has very limited control over these shifts, though certain mental states can be induced relatively easily - remembering moments of anger, for example, can enhance her horn some. Amelia's "wings" never fill in entirely, though they can grow big enough to give her a limited gliding ability. Amelia is something of a scandal - a child born from the wrong side of the bed to a moderately important politician, her differences could never be concealed, and the local press hounded everyone trying to get pictures of the "freak child." How she loathes that phrase. Amelia grew up in the limelight, never any rest from the paparazzi. So, instead, she learned to live with it - to control it, to make the unfair world play her games, instead of it's own. Amelia has far surpassed her father's political power, used every tool and trick she could learn, beg, or steal, done everything to come to a pinacle of power and safety. She knows they mock her still (though, not so many as she thinks), but none dare do it openly any more. She is steel, and a superior innovator and savior to those looked down upon in society.
In private, Amelia is still a very scared and scarred young woman, desperate for acceptance and far too terrified to let anyone get past her armor. She still feels the persecution of her early days, and they still haunt her thoughts and actions.
Amelia is desperately crushing on Xeres, Mage Council historian and fellow evolt, though he distinctly does not reciprocate her affection, finding her far too child-like to be of interest (they are several hundred years old, and Amelia is only 27). This has done little to smooth out her jagged emotions, hidden though they are, but she assures herself that he will hopefully change his mind in time. As a powerful evolt herself, she often had an excuse to seek him out in his role as The Evolt...until Sara took his place 2 years ago. Amelia is uncertain with what to do with the charming but guiless young woman, her desire to trust and have a friend at war with her unsatisfied longing for Xeres. The relationship is, in a word, complicated.
