clarence spent about half of his life looking for his purpose, and the other half accepting that he doesn't have one. his cat, hollyhock, waits for him at home as he goes through his daily routine -- wake up, go to work, work, work more, come home, and go to bed.
hes very timid, and not very good at being upfront about things. his personality is quiet -- not that he is, just that he's not very different, nor is he particularly outstanding. he very much thinks that his life isn't his own, but really, he wants to matter. he wants to be needed, a cog in a machine or an asset -- he's deeply unsatisfied with his life and himself. he tends to see things in black and white, but particularly concerning himself -- he doesn't consider himself a good person, and blames himself for the falling out of him and his high school ex, xiaoyan, and the following events, vowing to do better. he's actually, like, morally fine. he just thinks he isn't. his number is so high due to his general lack of self-awareness -- it’s harder to heal from your problems when you’ve had them your whole life and think it’s just a part of you. he’s accustomed to it.
on the train, he's found (and saved) by amelia and hazel and asks to go with them. him and amelia take care of hazel together, and eventually fall into a bit of a “long-married couple”-like relationship. he’s harbouring a huge crush on her, which seems to be unrequited… or is it…?
there's not much individuality in his fashion until after he gets off the train; he kind of just dresses like a grandma, though. he likes long skirts and cozy sweaters, khakis and chino pants, lots of bright, flowery colours and patterns. sometimes puts his hair back in a ponytail or a little bun. he arrives on the train in his work uniform, which is just a suit, but somewhere along the line he ditches the jacket.
