The Darke

History

A formable, intelligent demon made up of thick black vapours. An immense burst of dark smoke that encases the land, usually it overtakes entire cities of demons in one swift movement. It is one entity/one giant soul, that has many different voices and personalities within it.

It's one core objective: to devour the souls in its wake.

It can form almost out of nothing, and takes cities by surprise at any given moment. There are seals on certain buildings within the cities that ward against this massive demon of blackness. When word gets out that The Darke approaches, demons will frantically flock to these 'safe havens', often there will be not enough room inside for everyone and it is a mad dash, every soul out for themselves before all safe havens are sealed up. The Darke can reside in a city for many days at a time, sometimes even up to an entire week in Hell (which is the span of a month in the human realm).

After The Darke has passed, demons will enter the city again and this is also quite the mad dash - as The Darke leaves behind the 'corpses' of the unfortunate souls who didn't make it to a Haven in time. Devouring and destroying the souls, into a 'permanent death' (their presence literally ceases to exist, and they become a blank staring corpse for the rest of eternity unable to move, speak, or do anything but look on into nothing as time passes).

These 'broken souls' are then used for various things, and sold in the markets as their empty carcasses are highly valuable for the creation of food, items, clothing, buildings, and pretty much anything and everything in Hell.

(Everything in Hell, right down to the grain of sand under your feet was once a living soul, broken and withered away to nothing with time.)

The Darke is feared if you have no shelter, but the carnage it leaves in its wake is actively sought after.

Extra info:

- Its not exactly common knowledge, as everyone is afraid to do it, but if someone were to let The Darke into a safe haven (by breaking the seals while everyone hides inside) The Darke may spare your life, while it destroys everyone else in the Haven. But get out of the city FAST, because it could (and probably will) change its mind at any given second.

- Before it appears in front of a city, if you're particularly observant, you can see a little distorted flicker on the horizon, that darkens for a moment before disappearing and reappearing in another spot nearby. These flickers gradually become quicker and quicker as it approaches the city. There are specifically keen eyed demons stationed around the city edges to look for moments such as these (and other threats) in order to warn the inhabitants of the city as quickly as possible.

- As it overtakes a city, the inhabitants of the Havens (and those unfortunate enough to be caught within The Darke outside) will constantly be hearing whispering or shrieking until the massive entity vanishes as quickly as it arrived.

- There are Darke Chasers: Demons that actively seek and follow The Darke on its raids (trying to keep at a 'safe' distance from the afflicted city) in search of snatching the goods it leaves behind after its done. These Chasers use unique tools and abilities to detect where The Darke may attack next. Or they will simply keep an ear out for news on where it has recently hit/is currently hitting, while in nearby towns. Then proceed to the attacked city just as The Darke disappears, reaping the richest of rewards before the rest of the city gets a chance to.

- Sky Terrors are a particularly tasty treat for The Darke. Though they can be troublesome to overtake (and find), due to their similar gaseous appearances and slippery nature. Sky Terrors are known to have a vicious bite if The Darke is not particularly careful when devouring it, leaving The Darke to lick its wounds for many years afterwards.
