Background

Medjine was born to Esterline Jabouin, a Haitian refugee who fled to Miami, Florida. While briefly working in a church, Esterline met Medjine's biological father and conceived Medjine. After a series of events, Madjine's father abandoned them, and Esterline abandoned Madjine to return to Haiti, with the hope that someone in the church would give her a better life. Medjine was an orphan for two years before the Schaffers, a wealthy white couple from San Francisco, adopted her for the purpose of improving their public image. Mrs. Schaffer is a state senator, and Mr. Schaffer is the mayor of San Francisco. They enrolled her in a prestigious prepatory school, where she quickly rose to the top of her class as a computer programming and linguistic whiz.

Despite all evidence suggesting otherwise, Medjine is convinced that her biological father abducted her mother, and has been quietly searching for him so she can find her mother. In early 2008, Medjine travels to Los Angeles for a robotics compeitition and is nearly run over by Triz, who is driving a hijacked car. After a long conversation, they realize they share a biological father against whom they both bear an immeasurable grudge. They then decide to run away from home and embark on a journey to exact revege upon their father. Along the way, they meet and befriend Charles "Antivirus" McAfee (a moonlight hacker-for-hire from New York) and Yukio (an asocial boarding school student from Boston who resents his parents for sending him to the U.S.). Together, they form a vigilante team to locate Triz and Medjine's father and serve some much-needed justice along the way.

Personality

Medjine is reserved and introverted but not at all shy. She prefers to sit on the periphery and observe people rather than engage in conversation. She has a quiet sort of intensity that comes out when she gets fixated on an idea or a project (which happens often). For example, when she's working on a bit of code, she can forget to eat for an entire day. When she's trying to make a decision, she'll so caught up in doing mental simulations of all possible outcomes that she'll lose all grip of her current surroundings and will sometimes talk to herself, which gives her the outward appearance of a space cadet. Her peers find her a bit creepy, so she doesn't have many friends.
