Vehicular manslaughter is a rather unfortunate thing to be guilty of, but usually isn't the end of the world. If the losing part is the vice president of the local mafia, it's more of a problem. After spending a year in prison, learning a lot of insider information about the gang and the local crime scene through a former clan member, and cooperatively thwarting three attempted assassination attempts against the two of them, Vanessa was theoretically free again but a sizable target and fled the state. 

Settling into a new life under the radar worked well for a while, though rumors spread as she's secretive of her past and people really only know she's been to jail. But as the initial mafia clan put out a malicious Missing Person report for her, she had to go on a counteroffensive. With her closer, trusted friends she took the rumors to her advantage and seeded more of them - No one's going to report her if she's "supposedly" the head of a rival clan of assassins and giving her away would put anyone involved in danger. For the sake of her own safety, she's taken to quite a bit of conscious acting to keep the suspicion very much alive, She'll be "out of town" occasionally, dresses more the part since "the rumor is out", and makes vague threats when people are being difficult her way.

She's in direct contact with local law enforcement, who are aware of the dangers she's in and to not pursue the various reports against her due to lack of tangible evidence against her but don't actively refute anything either. For the time being her guise is working and she's living her effective, secret life as the fake assassin leader Nebula of the nonexistent Astralyte clan. No one's heard of them, but that's what makes a good assassin clan is it not?
