Name Akemi

Pronouns she/her

Age 13 y.o.

Birthday October 31st

Born San Francisco, CA

Globe ???

Akemi's the new kid in town...or so she's been told. Truth is, she can't remember anything about her sudden move. Even stranger is her father's behavior-he acts as if the pair have always lived on Creek Island! Though, these are the least of Akemi's worries.

Creek Island is a place infested with enigmas. Unpredictable weather, dangerous monsters, sentient technology...it’s much to take in. What’s worse, it seems the other residents refuse to acknowledge what’s happening!

Akemi's taken it upon herself to figure out what's going on. Creek Island hosts many questions, and Akemi's not stopping until they're all answered.

Background

Contrary to what her father claims, Akemi did not grow up on Creek Island! Akemi was actually born in San Francisco-all the way across the country, might she add.

If Akemi could describe her childhood in one word, it'd be "perplexing". Akemi's parents divorced when she was young, leaving her father with primary custody. She never remembered why they separated, nor where her mother moved to. Dad always found a way to dance around the subject, and Akemi had no method of asking Mom. These would be the first of many unanswered questions in the girl's life.

Akemi can vaguely recall the moments before "waking up" on Creek Island. It was summer, and her family was camping. Akemi met a girl at the campsite, and the two became fast friends. The pair decided to explore off the trail, and they found something. It was...radiant, almost otherworldly. Akemi felt simultaneous awe and dread as she gazed upon it. Unfortunately, Akemi's memories ended there. Just what was it that she saw that night? More importantly, whatever became of her friend? Yet more unanswered questions to add to the pile.

And now, here Akemi was-trapped on an unfamilar island with nothing but uncertainty to comfort her.

Personality

Though Akemi has strong ambitions, the same cannot be said about her demeanor. She's terrible with people, prone to overthinking, and panics easily. Akemi's undiagnosed ADHD and prominent stutter only serve to make conversing even more difficult. It's not uncommon for Akemi to space out mid-conversation, or struggle to verbally express her thoughts. Thankfully, Akemi's found an outlet to help her through these moments.

It's no secret that Akemi adores literature-especially of the "horror" variety. She discovered the genre one dreary night, and it stuck ever since. Something about all that existential dread just spoke to her, y'know? Akemi will eagerly go on for hours about the subject whenever the opportunity arises. The girl's overwhelming enthusiasm for the topic can make her seem like a completely different person. Though, some might argue that Akemi can get a bit...too passionate about the genre's more graphic associations. This passion for horror is what drove Akemi to begin writing her own stories. She's always carrying a notebook on her for when inspiration strikes. As expected, Akemi's work also delves into horror-and they're not for the faint of heart. In fact, Akemi's stories have given many readers "grisly, almost realistic" nightmares. She sees this as a great compliment.

Akemi's notebooks also help her to remember details and better articulate herself. Often times, Akemi will simply write her thoughts down instead of physically speaking. This habit helps make socializing a bit more manageable for her!

Akemi's Globe

The minute she woke up on Creek Island, Akemi noticed multiple oddities. The most blatant difference was the strange, violet-colored parasite that replaced Akemi's neck. Though she can't remember when this...thing...manifested, Akemi suspects it's connected to her sudden "move" onto the island.

Every globewalker experiences unique, supernatural symptoms. However, Akemi hasn't figured out what the extent of her symptoms are yet. She's noticed subtle changes here and there-including stronger senses and faster reflexes-but nothing concrete.

Despite her desperation for answers, Akemi can't help but feel uneasy about it all. Just what truth hides beneath this globe's surface?

Preferences

Likes

  • CREATIVE WRITING - Akemi would love to publish her work someday!
  • THE HORROR GENRE - Nothing thrills Akemi more than dread and disturbing imagery.
  • SELF-EXPRESSION - Akemi enjoys maintaining her appearance. She's particularly drawn to gothic fashion and similar styles.
  • GLOOMY PLACES - Despite her grievances, Akemi will give Creek Island some credit: the island's got a lot of secluded, quiet places to explore!
  • REPTILES - Akemi finds each and every species adorable. Snakes are her favorite, though!

Dislikes

  • UNANSWERED QUESTIONS - There's nothing Akemi hates more than being left in the dark.
  • EXECUTIVE DYSFUNCTION - Akemi's unmedicated ADHD has left her frustrated on multiple occasions.
  • SOCIALIZING - If only Akemi could solve Creek Island's mysteries from the comfort of her (?) bedroom.
  • DOGS - A bad experience has left Akemi terrified of canines. Canis Major's presence hasn't exactly eased her fears.
  • MILK PRODUCTS - Akemi's allergic.

Trivia

  • Akemi's gone through more redesigns than any other Arcana Hunters character. Seriously, I've lost count at this point.
  • Though she denies doing so, Akemi often incorporates people she dislikes into her horror stories. These characters rarely have pleasant fates.
  • Akemi's favorite piece of literature is Edgar Allen Poe's "The Raven".
  • I first made Akemi in 2016; back then, she was known as "Snowball" (because she wore a white puffy jacket). Snowball's only defining characteristic was that she summoned demons. It wasn't exactly compelling stuff.

Relationships

Before Akemi moved in, Carly was Creek Island's newest resident. Carly had grown frustrated with her fellow islanders. So much SHIT was happening, but everyone else was ignoring it! What a pain in the ass. Thankfully, Carly had found a kindred spirit in Akemi. The two agreed to bump their heads together and figure out what's going on. Despite their contrasting personalities, Akemi and Carly get along quite well!
