Blurb

Eliasz Oglęcki is the deuteragonist of Ballad about Silesia during the 1980s arc, and a side character during the 1990s arc. Hailing from Warsaw, Eliasz moved to Katowice with his family in 1976 to work as a miner in the coal mine “Wieczorek” (KWK “Wieczorek”; located in Nikiszowiec) – he lives in an apartment building in Giszowiec on Adama street. He’s bisexual. Father of teenage Wojtek Oglęcki, ex-husband of Alicja Natys, and the current, secret partner of Michał Cegielnik.

Eliasz was born as the youngest son of Hanna Oglęcka and Fryderyk Oglęcki; he has two older brothers, Sebastian Oglęcki (b. 1934) and Adrian Oglęcki (b. 1938). The boy had to grow up in the ruins of Warsaw destroyed by the war and the uprising, yet he still managed to find joy in all the small things around him. Despite what would seem like a normal childhood, young Eliasz for a long time felt like his problems don’t matter to anybody, and he’s just exaggerating things – which led him to always suppressing his negative feelings. He often had sibling quarrels with Sebastian; Adrian – as the good middle son – had to calm them down. As a teenager, he had romantic thoughts about other boys, but blamed it on hormones and proceed to ignore those feelings.
Eliasz got married with Alicja in 1965, and in 1970 their son, Wojciech, was born. The man is extroverted, so he doesn’t have any problems with making new friends; he can consider many people his acquaintances – most people who met him describe Eliasz as “charming”. He tries to stay in touch with his friends in Warsaw, despite not living in the city anymore.

The Varsovian is a calm and polite person; he keeps his manners all the time, using “excuse me?” instead of “what?” and such. Eliasz genuinely cares about people close to him, always making their well-being his priority. Yet, he hurt Alicja by cheating on her with Michał. Eliasz is often worried about himself or his partner due to their illegal relationship. The man stutters when he gets embarrassed or fills his sentences with lots of “ummm”s. He’s really interested in current politics.
Since a child, Eliasz couldn’t really tell when someone was joking – luckily for him, living with Michał taught him how to pick up the sarcasm. He’s good at math and physics. Eliasz knows many people from “Wieczorek”, with the majority being from his shift. Thanks to Michał once again, he’s well-versed with Krzysztof Parczewski and Stanisław Mochowski. He dislikes Wacław a lot… Eliasz isn’t a type to get jealous, but he absolutely hates how touchy Wacław is around Michał, despite the fact he doesn’t know how the relationship between Michał and Wenzel looked like.
Despite his even stoic visage, Eliasz is also paranoid – for example, because of his interest in politics, he’s afraid he might not suit the government’s book. Not to mention how scared he is somebody would find out he dates another man.

History

Early life

Eliasz Oglęcki was born on April 5th, 1941 to Fryderyk Oglęcki and Hanna Oglęcka during the occupation of Poland. At the age of 3, Eliasz and his family were civilians during the Warsaw Uprising, yet the man doesn't remember anything from that time. He grew up with two brothers – Sebastian (b. 1934) and Adrian (b. 1938) – in the ruins of the capital. His uncle fought in the Uprising and the boy loved to listen to his stories about those times. Eliasz managed to find joy in small things all around him. He often had sibling quarrels with Sebastian, and Adrian – as the good middle son – had to calm them down. As a kid, Eliasz liked going to the theater; he is extraverted as well, so he never had problems with making friends everywhere he went. He was a good student in school, especially in general science. As a teenager, Eliasz sometimes had romantic thoughts about other boys, but he never thought it was something serious – just hormones making him blush at friends, nothing more. At the age of 18, he got drafted into the army because of compulsory military service. Eliasz met Alicja Cereniewicz (who was 3 years younger than him) after the service, during the First of May celebrations – they married in 1965 after some time but decided to wait with getting children until Eliasz gets a stable job and they settle down. Finally, in 1970 their son, Wojciech, was born.

1980s

[TBA.]

After 1989

Only in the 1990s Wojtek decided to renew the relationship with his father after his own children were born – Eliasz was not only more than happy to keep in touch with his son, but also due to the news of becoming a grandfather. He helped with the kids sometimes. In 1995, Michał and Eliasz visited Warsaw together. Nowadays, Eliasz would be in his 80s. He and Michał got married in Germany in late 2017. Since then they live together in Michał's house and love each other as much as before.

Personality

Personality

Eliasz is a calm and polite person; he keeps his manners while talking to anybody, or just simply says "excuse me?" instead of "what?", which, to be fair, can be annoying according to some. He genuinely cares about people close to him, always making their well-being his priority. Eliasz always tries his best for his family – despite that, he cheated on Alicja with Michał, which he later regretted a lot (but knew it won't fix anything now). The man was often worried about himself or Michał, as homosexuality was a crime for most of his life – trying not to get caught while regular meeting with Michał was hard caused him stress.

Eliasz often stutters when he gets embarrassed, or fills his sentences with a lot of "ummm"s. Since childhood, Eliasz could never tell if one was joking or not, taking everything too seriously sometimes – there were people calling him a killjoy, and he had to make sure the person was joking. Luckily enough, living with Michał caught him a lot about joking and sarcasm. Speaking of teaching, Michał himself also taught Eliasz some words in Silesian – they might never be able to communicate only in this language, but now, the Varsowian knows at least some most popular phrases (like "przaja ci", meaning "I love you"). He might not accent them properly, but it still makes Michał smile.

The man often caves in and does things before thinking. Maybe that's how his whole affair with Michał started, along with unsuccessful marriage. Eliasz tries his best for Wojtek, as he loves his only son dearly. He could even starve, just to make sure Wojtek is properly fed. Of course, Wojtek has a hard time understanding it, which sometimes led to one of their many arguments. After Wojtek found out that his father is dating another man, Eliasz was left truly heartbroken – his only child hated him and even wanted to tell it to the militia. Eliasz is good at socializing at work, and never had problems with talking to anybody on his shift. After befriending their foreman, however, some changed their opinion about him – thinking of Eliasz as a simple bootlicker of Michał – as they didn't like the foreman as well. One of them was Paweł Kierchow, who always openly objected to Michał and his choices. But, on the other hand, thanks to Michał Eliasz got to known Krzysiek, Stanik, and Wacław. As a kid, he often had sibling quarrels with Sebastian, and Adrian – as the good middle son, who later worked in Citizens' Militia – had to calm them down. He's interested in politics.
