Idle Salesman // male // late 20s // Main Character
Idle Salesman is the third of Evan’s three teammates, and he is a representation of Evan’s deep hatred of himself and the outside world. None of the three teammates have mouths to directly communicate with Evan, so each of them uses an alternate method. Idle Salesman carries around a funeral portrait, which a monster named “Alter Ego” is trapped in. As the name would imply, Alter Ego is part of Idle Salesman, and has a mouth it can speak from. The thing is, Alter Ego will spout out anything Idle Salesman thinks regardless of how cruel or horrible it may be. Alter Ego is vulgar and violent, a part of Salesman’s brain he would never reveal to anyone directly.
Idle Salesman lives in a city analogous to any real-world big metropolitan area, with one major difference. There is a gigantic monolithic tower in the center of the city with a clock that is constantly ticking down to 0. When it finally stops, everyone turns into their own personal Alter Egos, monsters reflecting their worst qualities which act solely on instinct.
Idle Salesman is one of very few people who’s learned to capture his alter ego in an object so that he won’t turn into it, the obvious trade off being that it’s constantly around and he has to keep it under supervision at all times. Most people who engage in this practice give their Alter Egos pet names in an attempt to tame them and turn them into companions. Salesman will have none of this. He hates Alter Ego with a passion and not a day goes by where he doesn’t wish it was gone, so he will make no attempt to humanize it. It’ll be “Alter Ego” and only that until the day he dies.
The thing is, Idle Salesman is not a good person aside from Alter Ego. Alter Ego is a part of his personality, it’s not a completely separate being. Alter Ego only acts on the psychopathic thoughts and tendencies, Salesman is the one who actually has them. Idle Salesman doesn’t care about anyone, and he would gladly kill someone if he knew he could get away with it and it would make the rest of his life easier. He doesn’t hate Alter Ego for having it’s violent tendencies, he hates it for making them known.
