Profile
Kayo
Idealistic | Cunning | Resourceful
Nothing can touch your happy thoughts anymore - With your glass ceiling, walls and floor.
"The avian cautiously steps inside, long capes of feathers brushing against the wooden floors. His talons gently clack against it as he looks around the room. From his wide eyes, you think to yourself that he looks a freshly caught shrimp: A flopping fish out of water. A newbie to the ways of this town.
"As soon as his gaze has finished travelling to each and every entity in every corner, he takes a step that seems to echo with his presence. His feathers ruffle up, and his head is held high. Suddenly, he appears not as a flopping beginner, but someone who owns this place. Someone who built this place before you were even born. The master of this room, and everyone his waiting lapdogs."
Kayo only recently left his home in the mountains to go sailing the world after a vision from his deity, Aerdrie Faenya. Soon after, he decided that it was time to scrounge up the gold for his own ship. This would eventually lead him to Saltmarsh, where what started as an adventure turned into him being sucked into its complicated tunnel system of politics. And what better way to navigate them than become just as shrewd and tactical as the men at the top?

"My friends know they can rely on me, no matter what."
• Despite Kayo's scheming nature against those he feels have wronged him, he would never turn his back on friends and family. He loves his crew and they are often the only ones he'll truly open up to.
"I never pass up a friendly wager."
• Extremely prideful, once Kayo's been challenged by something, he absolutely HAS to prove himself no matter what. This can get him into sticky situations, but competition is extremely enticing. Both the friendly and unfriendly kind.
"The thing that keeps a ship together is mutual respect between captain and crew."
• No matter someone's history, as long as they prove themselves to be trustworthy, Kayo will consider them a friend. This was how he and his brother Nicholas ended up grabbing Dundermossa from the side of the road to travel with them: Because Kayo was easily able to see past the frightening facade (And was maybe just a liiittle bit too eager to befriend someone new).
"I'll always remember my first ship."
• Kayo makes a point to remember as many people and faces as he can, and their importance to his own journey.
"I can't help but pocket loose coins and other trinkets I come across."
• Whenever he is exploring areas with his party, he has a tendency to fall for anything shiny or interesting looking items. This has unfortunately lead to spider bites and getting grumpy whenever someone hoarded shiny things all for themselves. Thankfully, Kayo has a Bag of Holding, so there's nothing wrong with HIM hoarding things!
Early Life
Eventual
Early Life
• Hatched in a nursery when the bearfolk cub Nicholas was brought in.
• Grew up with the bearfolk youngling as brothers.
• The two would frequently get into trouble together, strengthening their bond and faith in one another.
Adolescence
• Was taken to meet the bearfolk cubs family on Stormbreaker. Didn't like being around so many people but was immediately accepted into the family tree.
• Started to practice the faith of Aerdrie Faenya, goddesse of the winds.
Adulthood
• Becomes one of Aerdrie Faenya's main devotees on the mountains.
• Recieves a feather from the heavens for his devotion.
• Has a vision of soaring across the seas, believes this to be a mission from his goddess to see the world.
• Calls for his little-big-brother Nicholas to travel the world with him.
• Meets the trollkin Dundermossa and strings him along in their travels.
• The trio end up on Captain Cruise's ship and are scammed for work, paid in peanuts and kicked off in Saltmarsh.
• Journey to the abandoned Alchemist's House and learn of its secrets and find a tragic family death.
• Discover proof that the Hand of Blood may have their hands in Saltmarsh's seedy underbelly.
• Acquaint themselves with and begin working for Primewater, a man on Saltmarsh's council (whom Kayo suspects is working with the Hand of Blood to smuggle goods). Are sent to investigate a lizardfolk nest.
• Find that the lizardfolk are running from the Hand of Blood and trying to get allies to deal with the threat. To prove their loyalty, the party are sent to slay Thousand Teeth.
• Kayo watches his brother, Nicholas, be chomped up alive by the massive monster and slays it with a critical hit Inflict Wounds casted in pure rage.
• Returns with the skull only to watch the lizardfolk den go up in flames from the Hand of Blood.
• Holds a meeting with the council of Saltmarsh where he exposes Primewater. When Primewater fakes a heart attack to get out of the situation, Kayo merely steps on his throat and whispers: "You are the reason my brother is dead." Primewater is arrested.
Proficiecies
Skill Proficiencies
MAGIC
Kayo is a level 5 spellcaster. Due to multiclassing he cannot use spells that start at level 3, but is able to use his level 3 spell slots to cast other spells.
Aarakocra
• Flight: Kayo has a flying speed of 50 feet as long as he is not wearing medium or heavy armor.
• Talons: While he doesn't use it often, Kayo is able to deal minor damage with his claws.
Cleric: Trickery Domain
Aerdrie Faenya is a deity who is free, chaotic and impulsive. Through following her teachings, Kayo's magic is aligned with the Trickery domain.
• Blessing of the Trickster: By adding a gust of wind to a person's step, Kayo is able to give any creature an advantage to stealth for an hour.
• Channel Divinity: Invoke Duplicity: With a touch of magic and a cold wind, Kayo is able to create an incorporeal clone of himself that, should he wish it, he is able to cast spells through. He uses this to confuse enemies on the battlefield and distracting them to give himself an advantage.
Bard: College of Whispers
Through parrotting the mannerisms and strategies of Lord Primewater, Kayo's own leadership and charisma increased. However, this took a sinister turn once Nicholas passed on.
• Psychic Blades: When hitting a creature with a weapon attack, Kayo is able to do damage directly to their mind.
• Words of Terror: When speaking with a creature for a long period of time, Kayo is able to magically infuse his words with a darkness that can frighten the creature he is speaking to.
Bag of Holding [ wondrous item, uncommon ]
This bag has an interior space considerably larger than its outside dimensions, roughly 2 feet in diameter at the mouth and 4 feet deep. The bag can hold up to 500 pounds, not exceeding a volume of 64 cubic feet. The bag weighs 15 pounds, regardless of its contents. Retrieving an item from the bag requires an action.
Ornate Pan Flute [ wondrous item, uncommon ]
Instrument of the Bards. The flute is decorated with white feathers and beads. It has ornate carvings of falling feathers.
Cast-Off Leather Armor [ Armor, common ]
You can doff this armor as an action. (AC 11)
Quarterstaff [ melee, common ]
Kayo's preferred method of physical attacks. Once squashed a bullywug's skull with it.
Nicholas
The two grew up together and often would refer to each other as "little-big brother" affectionately. Nicholas' death took a very hard toll on Kayo, and he is still mourning.
Dundermossa (among other names)
Kayo was the one who approached Dundermossa and offered him a hand in friendship. He cares greatly for the trollkin and will get annoyed with anyone intimidated by the large hulking druid. He finds Dundermossa's magic fascinating. They've been through hell - and gotten wasted - together.
Throom
While they haven't known each other for long, Kayo found himself easily getting along with the loxodon who stopped him and Dundermossa from running headlong into danger. He wants to get to know the fighter more.

Trivia
- His bearfolk family's home was the legendary ship 'Stormbreaker,' where he learned all the songs he now plays as a bard.
Design Notes
- Only his tailfeathers are darker blue.
- His arms and wings are connected - like a wyvern.
- Thus, his arms are intentionally much longer than regular 'humanoid' arms.
Physical Appearance

Attributes
Kayo dresses to impress, while also keeping his clothing loose enough to where he can move easily.
His plumage - his pride and joy - is a dusky gray with tones of both the daylight sky and the dark ocean. He decorates his body with loose-fitting black and purple clothes for ease of movement, and is able to unclasp the leather vest underneath in case it suddenly needs to go. The long feathers on the back of his head have been braided together. Standing apart from all the dull dark colours are his very bright golden eyes.
