Born to Tal-Vashoth parents, Reth and Akosta Adaar, Boris Adaar grew up as a Vashoth child with very little context of his people's culture. His parents found solace on a plot of land in the Free Marches, far away from Par Vollen. At age 8, Avaarad agents find them at their home; Reth distracts the agents while Akosta carries Boris to safety. Akosta returns to the house after several days to ensure that the agents wouldn't be waiting for them still; she finds Reth's sword left behind and takes it. For a time, Boris and Akosta were on their own with no home to call their own.
The generosity of a stranger, Gaston Reynard a disgraced Champion, gives the two a place to live; when they arrive to his home, they are introduced to his wife, Leonie, who is an ex-Tamassran, and Tal-Vashoth herself. For the next decade of Boris' life, he grows up learning parts of the Qunari and their culture that Leonie would have taught any child in her school, and is trained how to use his father's sword by Reynard. Unbeknownst to them, Reth had been re-educated in the Qun to continue his work as an assassin and correspondent. When Reth is caught keeping an eye on his family from a distance by the Qunari, they seize the advantage and send more agents to retrieve the four while Boris and Reynard are out training. The agents only retrieve Akosta.
From that point on, Boris leaves Reynard and Leonie with determination to find his mother again. When he asks people across the Free Marches if they had seen any Qunari passing through, he's disappointed that the Qunari he'd been trailing were a group of Tal-Vashoth Mercenaries, and not the Ben-Hassrath spies that took his mother. The Valo-Kas, however take him in anyway, where he meets his closest friend, Kaariss, and becomes a well respected warrior and strategist amongst the company.
The Valo-Kas are hired as peace keepers at the Chantry Conclave when Boris sneaks off, and finds trouble... Which in turn ties him up with the Inquisition
