Mar
30 . he/him . ship chandler

summary

An experienced shiphand who's settled in (kingdom) for the time being, working as a supplier for merchant ships. Mar's been at sea since he was a child, taking Elegy under his wing several years ago. Having finally saved up to settle somewhere, he decides to set up shop in (kingdom), bringing Elegy with him.

Charismatic, sharp, and very willing to lie, Mar has made many friends (and enemies) within the underbelly of the castletown. When he stumbles across Prince Akheron one night, lost and frightened, he sees an oppurtunity and siezes it. Befriending the young prince, he establishes himself as an authority figure for Church while keeping enough distance to not raise suspicion.

notes
  • His full name is Marlowe Blackwell, though he's gone by many aliases.
  • In the very first draft of Tolling Bell, Mar was the hero and Church was the villainous king.
  • He was originally named Manic and was a retired pirate.

personality

charming . manipulative . power-hungry

Charismatic to an overwhelming extent, Mar has always used his charm to work his way up the ranks in life. He owes everything he has to his silver tongue and sharp wit...

He's willing to do whatever it takes for the slightest bit of power, and will cheat and lie his way to the top if he gets the chance to. His need for control makes him antsy, though, and his impulsiveness sometimes ruins carefully-laid plans.

You trust me, don't you, baby?
Yeah, you'd hand your life to me.
