Casimir Russell

Casimir was born in Alberobello, Italy to parents that were originally as ridiculous as him. His parents were never really clear on the circumstances of their meeting or how they fell in love, but as far as Casimir knows his mother turned from unicorn to human to avoid poachers that were hunting the unicorn population in Italy. She met Casimir's father and they were in love from the moment they met. They tried to keep a low profile, but in a town with only 10,000 people, it was hard to hide the fact that mama unicorn had no family and had just "mysteriously" showed up one day. She wound up giving birth to Casimir right before they were going to move. He was given the name originally of Casimiro, but as they were getting ready to move to America (a place they thought should be easy to fade into and away and not stand out so much), but they decided that America would be so judgmental. His mother was convinced that moving to America, the Americans would see them as mafia members and thugs, just like in movies, and his father stoically and seriously agreed (as stated, they were originally as dramatic as Casimir). Casimiro became Casimir, Felice became Felix, and Chiara became Clara. They settled and they were happy, they found a life that worked for them. But as years passed, Casimir's parents fell out of love; his father grew tired and burdened while his mother became to feel the ache of what she had given up to be with her husband. As much as they had been wildly in love in the beginning, their young love just couldn't hold up; Casimir's mother realized that love hadn't replaced what she once had and Casimir's father couldn't handle knowing that he couldn't change that.

Things cooled in their family. The more flamboyant Casimir got, the less his parents did. Casimir went through his life performing every second he was able to - he joined every theater class he could, every play he could. Even when his parents never made a single show ("I work too much", his father said; "I'm too sick," his mother said), he found a love of performing. He lived and thrived being on stage. He was content to do that all until it came time for college. He was excited to go to college, because it was a sign of him finally spreading his wings, of being able to go out on his own. College meant he was going to be his own man. Unfortunately, he couldn't afford to be his own man. His parents had stashed money away for his college (they were tired and worn down people, but they love their son and they wanted to give him the chance to go to college), but he couldn't go to school and work, according to him. So he resolved to stay at home while he went to school. He had every intention of doing a theater major, but his father sat him down and said he needed to think about the reality of things. His dreams may be telling him that he should go into life as an actor, but did they really make a lot of money? He needed to supplement that with a "real" job. Casimir reluctantly signed up for and worked on majoring in Liberal Studies while minoring in theater.

It was in college that he met Finlay O'Brien (who at the time still spelt his name Fionnlagh). The two of them hit it off because when Casimir falls in love, he falls in love hard and Finlay was flattered by that. They flirted for a bit until one day, they decided to date. One date turned into two, then three, then four, and then suddenly they were dating for four years. They had every intention of getting married, but unfortunately, they had fallen out of love. Casimir had grown tired of Finlay's fussiness and rules, Finlay had grown frustrated with Casimir's disregard of everything about Finlay. It's not fair to say that they split amicably, but it wasn't horrible, either. Casimir made Finlay essentially drag out the process before finally announcing that he was glad they were done and left with a sashay of hips. Casimir decided he was going to focus solely on his career at that point.

The continuation of Casimir's story is explored in the To the Moon, Through the Stars story Star Dust.
