Background

"I never want to grow up!"

Those are the words Lysander said on the last day of elementary school, and regretted for the rest of his life. The summer after was filled with precious memories, until one day he collapsed with a sudden illness.

Lysander came from a wealthy family with a loving mother and father. He was an only child with a very happy life and completely unaware of the world's many troubles. So when he suddenly became bedridden, everyone in the family was shocked. Lysander's parents hired doctors from all around, every one of them coming out of the boy's bedroom with bad news. As much as his parents dreaded it, Lysander was diagnosed with a heart illness. Even though professionals said there was no cure, his parents never gave up.

Gradually, Lysander's health only worsened. He ended up not going to middle school and just being home-schooled by a tutor. All his friends stopped visiting him and went on to do other things while Lysander could only lay in his bed. However, Lysander still smiled for his family, for those he loved and didn't want to worry. "I'm feeling a lot better today," he would say in a weak and quiet voice while still having that gentle smile. Because Lysander was lonely and books did only so much for him, the boy developed a habit of daydreaming. It was actually a lot of fun to spend time in his own little world, where even flying was possible, and where he wasn't sick.

One night, his fate was sealed. When his mother thought Lysander was asleep, she was talking to the doctor outside his bedroom door.

"D-doctor..! No, it can't be!"

"I'm terribly sorry, but your son has one week left."

It was the night of his 15th birthday that Lysander heard those words. He would never forget them. On any normal occasion, Lysander would have cried himself to sleep, but he didn't want to worry his family or make his own health worse. Still, he couldn't help but shed a single tear...
During the following days, Lysander noticed how much happier his family acted. The tutoring sessions were cancelled and he was allowed more privileges, such as eating whatever he liked or staying up later. His parents spiled him beyond what he could handle, but Lysander decided to play along just to make them happy. His mother even quit her job for a while so they could spend more time together. And Lysander really was grateful and happy to not be lonely for once, if only his parents had recognized that need for company earlier.

Lysander did have one friend. It was a stuffed bunny with long floppy ears. On the last day, Lysander finally made a big decision. At dawn he got dressed, combed his hair nicely, washed his face and everything. And, taking the stuffed rabbit with him, Lysander quietly crept downstairs while his parents were still sleeping. The boy was so fragile and delicate, he could hardly walk on his own without almost stumbling. Still, his determination was what got him through the house until he stood at the front door. Taking a deep breath, Lysander stepped outside.

What the boy saw was beyond amazing to him. It was a warm spring morning, everything was quiet and still sleeping. But that wasn't what Lysander fell in love with. In the sky was the most beautiful sunrise Lysander had ever laid eyes upon. It was as if the entire world was celebrating for him, like a giant final farewell. A smile like no other was stuck on his face as a few tears of joy slid down his cheeks. But those tears were not only of happiness, for at that moment, Lysander had an urge to see more. He wanted to see the world, everything! He wanted to live. However, that was when it happened. A sudden pain went through Lysander's body as his heart stopped.

"It's beautiful...."

And with those final words, Lysander fell to the ground, cold and lifeless. But he didn't look cold at all, for the boy still had a warm smile on his face.
