Ben (Fallout)

Ben is a fairly quiet and introverted person who tends to have kind of a cynical outlook on life. He's spent far too much of his life by himself and really doesn't have much in the way of social skills, nor does he have any real interest in talking excessively most of the time, which tends to make him come off as being kind of unapproachable to most people. And while he is a really sweet and caring guy around people who have taken the time to get to know him, he can definitely be grouchy and more than a bit of an asshole at times, especially when people get on his nerves. He's extremely sarcastic and has a very morbid sense of humor.

Originally hailing from a small settlement somewhere in what was once northern Colorado, Ben was mostly raised by his mother, with a father who was barely around. There weren't a lot of kids in the settlement and he never really had much in the way of friends, especially not ones his own age, and instead found himself occupying his time by reading far too many old pre-war books about people who went on grand adventures, which left him consumed by a constant sense of wanderlust, and he always found himself longing to see the world outside of his hometown, but never could quite bring himself to leave everything he knew behind. That is, until things started to turn to utter shit... His early adult years began in tragedy and turmoil, which began with the untimely death of his mother. For the first, but certainly not last time in his life, he found himself utterly alone. His father finally bothered to show up again after almost a full year of being away, and it became all too clear very quickly that he had only returned because he wanted something from his son, and Ben found himself getting dragged into joining a small raiding party of sorts bound for Denver, where he would end up having his first of many encounters with the Legion. He'd heard stories about them of course, but up until that point they'd been just that, stories. And he now began to realize just how big of a threat they really were.

As the Legion began to spread further, and with next to nothing left at home anymore to hold him back, Ben finally brought his lifelong dreams to fruition and set off west, with no real goals in mind. He would spend the next few years wandering about, drifting from place to place, never staying anywhere for longer than a year or so and always leaving before people started to expect too much from him. It wasn't quite what he would consider the ideal life, but it worked out alright for the most part. Even if it was kind of lonely... Eventually he made it to New California where, after finding himself extremely short on caps, he made an impulsive decision and took up a job with the Mojave Express, figuring that if he was going to keep drifting around from place to place, he may as well at least get paid to do it. It was alright work for a time, and he got to see some interesting places he probably wouldn't have otherwise gone on his own, and met people he otherwise would never have spoken to. In some ways things almost seemed to be picking up for him. Sure, he was still lonely, but at least his life was finally starting to feel like it had real purpose. Nice things don't last however, and poor Ben found himself with the extremely unfortunate luck of being the courier hired to carry the platinum chip to New Vegas. He made it as far as Goodsprings before he was ambushed by several men, led by one with a name uncomfortably similar to his own, and he found himself staring directly into the barrel of a gun for reasons he didn't even fully understand. The next thing he knew, he was laying in a hospital bed, somehow having miraculously survived a bullet to the head.

While recovering, Ben briefly debated abandoning his job and getting as far away from the Mojave as possible, (after all, running away from things that had become more of a problem than they were worth was kind of his specialty.) However, in the end his sense of revenge duty won out, (hey what else are you supposed to do when a guy with the same name as you tries to kill you and steals your stuff) and he set off on the long road towards Vegas to recover the chip and get back at the man who shot him. Little did he know then just how intertwined in the fate of the Mojave he would become…
