Rosa

Please note: Everything is a work in progress! I've got more I'm figuring out/fleshing out/etc.

Rosa is a character set in the Leijiverse, specifically the Captain Harlock continuity of Arcadia of My Youth, and Endless Orbit SSX. She's in a canon divergent version of this continuity and I also want to toy around with the concepts of her in other Captain Harlock continuities, or other Leijiverse series some day.

Rough personality outline: Shy and easily flustered. Does her best to have hope, but is still very pessimistic(but working on it!). Tries to look for the best in others when she can. Can get very excitable and talkative around the right people. Very hands on and loves to tinker. Cares about others. Very Passionate about the things she loves.

Rosa’s Story (So Far):

Born on Earth in a time before the illumidas took control, she grew up having a relatively average youth. Her parents worked in the solar federation to help build the further advancement of earth and the galaxy. Her mother is a technician and her father a spy/soldier. Even before the war they were constantly busy and Rosa was left to herself often. Her uncle Hurlbert who grew up with Rosa’s mom taught Rosa so much of what she knows about technical work. Rosa calls her uncle “Uncle Hurley”, Hurley and her are incredibly close and is one of the people outside the resistance she is closest with. Growing up her and Hurley would work together on various technical projects and tinker. Basic electronics, clocks, radios, etc. Rosa also has made dolls for herself since she was about 10 and continues to make them to this day in her free time alongside other tinkering work she would do for fun.

Rosa has been shy since her youth, wanting to talk to others but was held back by the grasp of anxiety. She did make friends growing up and proved herself to be capable of making connections. Though it is still hard for her, and she can get nervous around new people until she gets to know them a bit more.

While her relationship with the rest of her family isn’t really strained, it could be much better. Hurley is the only one from her extended family she is close with, and even knows actually.  Hurley used to be a spy for the federation. She would read his old manuals and files, and look through his spy old tools...without his permission 99% of the time. But that’s how she gained a small handful of knowledge of gathering intel. Her curiosity would come in handy later down the line even though she wouldn’t know at this time.

In her adolescence and early adulthood she started to feel like she had no purpose. Rosa’s family had ties to the betterment of the planet and universe, yet she felt like there was no point to it with the rapidly growing power and reach of the illumidas. She just couldn’t help but have a pessimistic view because even if things were going forward in one step, it wasn’t long before the illumidas or other corrupt forces such as the earth government who were starting to play by their rules, “for the sake of reaching peace with the illumidas” would make things take three steps back.

At the age of 22 Rosa moved out of her home, and eventually lost contact with her parents. She still has contact with Hurley to this day, she moved in with him actually. He was closer to the city which really turned out to be in Rosa’s best interest, as well as being with Uncle Hurley.

She just felt like she couldn’t make a difference for the longest time, until Maya’s voice entered her life. Around Rosa being 25-26 is when Rosa began to hear the Voice of Free Arcadia Broadcasts. Before hearing Maya’s underground broadcasts, Rosa had little hope for the future of the earth with the illumidas invasion, when she first hears Maya’s messages and songs of hope she begins to slowly have more hope, eventually gathering enough courage to join the earthman resistance thanks to Maya’s words.

Rosa slowly falls for the voice behind the radio without fully realizing until she meets her in person for the first time in a resistance meeting. She was more radiant than Rosa imagined. Maya is incredibly kind to Rosa, welcoming her to their efforts. Rosa gets assigned to Intel gathering due to her knowledge plus the known connection in the resistance Hurley has with them, his spy days for the solar federation might be over but he helps the Earthman Resistance very often.

Maya takes a liking to Rosa very quickly, Rosa’s polite nature but more importantly, her willingness to put her all into her work caught Maya’s eye immediately. Rosa has a tendency to be shy and easily flustered around Maya when they first started interacting, eventually becoming more at ease the more time they spent together. Rosa can still get very blushy though.

Rosa overtime rises in the ranks and becomes a more skilled gatherer of intel, continuing to learn from her uncle. And going on more dangerous missions. Rosa eventually gets a second job for the resistance too. When tinkering with a small radio unit on a break in the base she was noticed and radio tech/behind the scenes duties with Maya were assigned to her alongside her intel work. That’s how she really began to have actual contact with Maya since she was now working with her. (Falling for the voice on the radio of free Arcadia made her want to try learning how to work the radio more when she first heard her broadcasts.)

Now along with her gathering intel, Rosa does the radio tech work/behind the scenes things for the broadcasts as well. The other higher ups noticed Maya could use some extra hands since she can be busy. While Maya knows how to work the radio very well herself, Rosa’s help is appreciated incredibly. 

Maya is the voice of the resistance. Bringing hope to countless people across the earth with her broadcasts. Rosa is the amplifier of her voice behind the scenes, making it even stronger and have a bigger reach than it ever has before.

(I don’t have exactly when Maya realizes her feelings for Rosa, and how they get together just yet. So don't mind this lil timeskip-esque jump right here for now until I figure it out.)

Maya and Rosa have a deep love and respect for each other. When together they bring out the best in each other. Maya wants to help Rosa “bloom” and realize the inner beauty and strength she has. Maya and Rosa both know Maya can’t necessarily make Rosa realize this, and that it comes from within Rosa herself. But Maya wants to encourage her growth and help Rosa get on the path to realizing how wonderful she is, and that her life does enrich others. That she matters and can make a difference. Maya deeply hopes that Rosa will have her inner growth and bloom someday, she wants to see this day come.

And over time, Rosa will get this growth from inside her, and realize the beauty and strength she’s always had.

Tidbits about Rosa:

• Maya calls Rosa her “Rosebud” or her “Flower” and gave Rosa the rose that's seen in her jacket. It’s a high quality silk rose Maya made herself that she put in that pocket when they began to date.
• To protect the location of the base, Maya does broadcasts in multiple places to help make it even harder for the illumidas to find their base. The main base has multiple protections in place and they do broadcasts from there, but this method makes things much harder for the illumidas to track. Shortly after a broadcast in a location outside of the base they run off before they can get caught by illumidas troops. They use a smaller more portable radio setup to make it easier to do this. (I will latter attach a image of the settei at a later point because there is an actual design for this, mainly in the end of the movie as it's in the BG sort and used in SSX once or twice)
