JON the MINGLER

"WELL WELL, if it isn't Cog Nation's up-and-coming nauseatingly pink musical star! Looking like something that rolled out of a GUMBALL machine, Jon was factory made to radiate camp and retro glam! If his specially-designed razor sharp key tickling pianist fingers don't dazzle you, surely his ridiculous outfit will be a good enough distraction! Sweet as can be with his fans, rumor has it that he gets a little TENSE if he has to share the stage with other acts. Guess that means he's out of the running for being a guest on my show, huh?" - Crash Course Ep. 921 Transcript

PERSONALITY CORE

With stretchy arms and a color scheme that makes even toons raise an eyebrow, Jon stands out--and he likes it that way! Excitable, positive, goofy, and full of boundless energy, this cog loves attention and will do just about anything to make--and keep--his fans! Everyone's a fan! His friends, his bosses, his coworkers...everyone! And if you aren't a fan? Well, you're an enemy. Because he's so very likeable that only the most vile sort of person could hate a guy like him, right?! He's very sweet, very artsy, and just loves having a good time. There's absolutely no downside to this guy that isn't YOUR personal problem.

In actuality, Jon was created by Gus to be a hindrance to other cogs. Once he learns of this, Jon begins to grapple with the choice of what he's "supposed" to do and what is best for his fellow robots. To side with the thing that created him for evil, or to work with those that want what's best for everyone, not just themselves. Unfortunately, Jon chooses incorrectly and pays dearly for it.

A STAR IS MADE, NOT BORN...

Jon is a cog with a complete lack of identity beyond what he's been told by others. As such, he clings to what he knows and uses every sliver of approval and validation given to him as a signal of "yes, this is what I should be doing, and what I need to do to exist." Due to this, anything that wounds his ego (meaning sense of self, not pride) is enough to shake him to his core and make him feel insecure, unstable, and unsafe. He will lash out at things that threaten his "place", though it's genuinely not out of malice--he just doesn't have the regulatory processors to understand he's being irrational.

Being the creation of a toon gives Jon some quirks that other cogs don't have, which both boosts his overall appeal to toons and makes him insufferable to be around for too long. He never takes anything seriously, and tends to only retain information that pertains to himself or his interests. While a fun and positive person on the surface, if you look under the hood, you'll see that Jon is just a deeply insecure individual whose crossed wires led to an unhealthy attachment style and a relentless need to be the main character at all times.

BACKLOG

Background

Crashing onto the RetroToon musical scene as a breakout robo-star, Jon is a Mingler that made waves with his piano playing prowess and goofy, warm-hearted camp! Quickly making a name for himself as a good cog that just wants to have a fun time and not ~uproot society~, his shows and message seemed to exist in direct opposition to the rising underground movement of cogs wanting to better their situation. But that's not his fault! He just wants everyone to stop fighting and be nice!

After having one of his shows disrupted by those meanie cogs and nearly getting hurt in the process, Jon views those guys as evil, dangerous, and just plain rude! Especially that pink one with the stupid glasses. They'll pay for ruining his show!

THE FOWL PLOT

After the disaster ruined his concert, Jon becomes a PR nightmare for Ron and his cog friends. Going on talk shows and news circuits detailing the horrors and anguish of almost being taken offline by a second-rate pianist, he quickly works to turn the public against those meanies and disregards all of their attempts to covertly tell him that it was all an accident. It isn't until those dastardly cogs reveal that Jon is a serial number-less FREAK with no public records and no factory seal that things start to go south, and the public turns against HIM for being a complete anomaly. He loses everything, and is forced to join up with the very cogs he HATES in order to get by. He comes to understand that the cogs he hated so much were actually extremely kind, and he begins to have a change of heart. Revealing himself to be an Interdimensional Visitor from a world where Cogs are hellbent on turning the world into a corporate wasteland, Doctor Gus the Most Villainous of Geese begins a campaign of mind control and sabotage, using the "gifts" and "repairs" he provided for his former allies and turning them into dangerous weapons. Telling Jon that he was, in fact, one of those weapons, Gus gives Jon an ultimatum--join him willingly and, after all the other cogs are eliminated, be the only robot left--or perish along with the others. Despite the kindness shown to him, and the very clear dangers posed by Gus, Jon accepts without hesistation. Better to let his own star shine than to lose it all for a cause that only seemed to dampen his limelight.

Not realizing that Gus had basically presented him with the options of "become a consenting weapon" and "become a brainwashed weapon", Jon is tasked with eliminating his enemy and number one obstacle to success, Ron the Mingler. Told an incredible amount of lies by Gus about how Ron always hated him and wanted to take over as being Cog Nation's only pink piano playing mingler, Jon sets out on a frenzied warpath to take out his rival before his rival can get to him!

Confronting Ron on his way to stop Gus from wiping out Cogkind, Jon begins using his upgrades to attack the fellow mingler and stop him from saving his friends. Unwilling to be talked down or reasoned with, Ron finds himself unable to dispatch Jon without harm, and in order to stop Gus, he has to make a decision that compromises everything that he stands for. It takes everything he has, but he is able to overpower Jon by pulling him apart due to his toony, springy anatomy. Jon's core is unable to be salvaged, due to being made so shoddily and with proprietary toon materials, so he powers down for good.

While it was what had to be done to essentially save their world and everyone in it, Ron never views it that way. Gus engineered this entire situation so that no matter who won, Ron would lose, and Jon's entire existence was a cruel joke to the maniacal goose. This single act haunts Ron forever, and he saved Jon's core in the hopes that one day he can find someone, somewhere that can fix him.

COWORKERS

R0N41D-M1 || Ron

MORTAL ENEMY! PINK MENACE! YOU MAY BE THE SAME COLOR AS ME, BUT YOU WEAR IT WORSE!
Jon doesn't CARE about Ron's stupid plans and long-term goals and niceness and shoulder touches, because it's only ever a promise that the FUTURE will be good. What about NOW? Jon already feels GOOD ALREADY! YOU, RON, just make everything WORSE! You weren't even MADE to play piano! Why do you even BOTHER!!

Doctor Gus

While initially upset and betrayed that Gus would make him and then not TELL him about it, Gus's manipulative ways quickly soothe Jon's aching processors and make him feel special again. It's almost like he was designed that way or something!!
Jon never ever understands just how little Gus cared for him, nor did he realize he was only made to be a chew toy for Ron to mangle. He powers down thinking he was doing what was right, and that Gus was like all of his other "fans", caring about him and thinking he was so very special and loved that, even a goose that hated cogs to such a degree would make an exception just for him.

CR45H-TLM || CRASH

With Crash's show being the biggest means of swaying public opinion, Jon felt like Crash was a boogeyman, always one bad show away from dooming him to a life of irrelivance and obscurity. Still having a great amount of respect for Crash, Jon kept up with his show obsessively, often changing his sets, opinions, and mannerisms based on what was deemed socially unacceptable. Jon would never go on the show, however, as even he knew he couldn't handle the Crash Course hot seat without spiraling.
