Summary
He should have been a god.
That was what he thought - He had joined them in their training, allowed the gods to change his form, grant him their so-called gifts, studied and worked and fought to prove his worth. He gave all he had in an effort to earn his role. He should have been chosen to become the next.
But no. The gods are cruel and careless. What care have they for the mortals who they choose to follow in their footsteps? None, none at all.
And so, when his godhood was denied, Emery left. He defected, departed in a rage. And he found his way to Earth, where he now wanders alone - For where could he go now, the way that he is? The way that they made him?
They ruined his life. And he would never forgive them for that.
Trivia
- Emery was granted nuclear abilities by the gods, and as a result is in a state of constant radioactive decay - Emery himself is unharmed by this, but he has the potential to harm others with his radiation, and has to constantly focus to keep his powers under control.
- Emery was previously in training to take up the role of the god of decay, one of the gods from the realm of the Trinity Tree, where Berkeley originated from. He abandoned his discipleship after the old god of decay was reincarnated in a new form, rather than having his role given to another, in spite of having warred until both life and decay were reduced to ash. Due to the volatile nature of the form he was granted, and the fact that he was denied the role he was supposedly meant for, Emery believes the gods have betrayed him and ruined his life.
- Emery has joined the Wayfarers in a somewhat unofficial manner, traveling with them, but on the outskirts of the group. He knows Amara from their time training together beneath the gods, and recognizes Berkeley as one of the new gods - He's particularly bitter about the latter, given their lack of training prior to being granted their godhood, and is traveling alongside them mainly in hopes that they will be able to either give him the role of god that he worked so hard for, or that they will be able to strip him of his "gifts" and allow him to live a normal life again.
- The name Emery shares a root, Heimirich, with Enrico - Emery's name was chosen due to this connection, and in turn as a reference to Enrico Fermi, the man who led the team which designed and built the first man-made nuclear reactor.
