Gabriel grew up in Rhode Island, where he took an interest in biology and the fundamental building blocks of life. He attended Columbia University shortly after graduating high school and went on to become a professor at a prestigious university in New York, teaching Biology and Genetics. Its here he would meet his soon-to-be roommate and partner, August Burns. The two would hit it off and end up moving in together, Gabriel later finding out about August's mutant powers. Gabe began preforming experiments without the College Boards approval using college utilities and supplies within his lab on school property. He would later create a slime-like organism that required human symbiosis to survive, entering his system while Gabe was asleep. A coworker would catch Gabriel napping in his room with stolen lab equipment strewn about, and he would be fired. The organism within Gabe, later known as Bigmuth, causes him to become extraordinarily hungry, increases his smell, night-sight, and hearing almost unbearably so, give him inhuman strength, and allows him to shift into a blue bestial form often referred to by the people of New York as the "Brooklyn Beast".
