The chalcedragates originate from a gas planet with crystal rain, beginning in incorporeal form. To ascend from infancy, they disperse amongst the local star system and embed themselves beneath the rocky crusts of other planets. There, in the mantle of a foreign planet, they incubate until it is time to hatch hundreds of years later. When they emerge, they do so as winged and feathered dragons with crystalline horns.

Idris, however, had the misfortune of embedding in Earth, a planet unsuited to incubating her kind. As the rest of those in her clutch began to hatch and take to the skies and the heavens, Idris remained incubating just above the Earth's asthenosphere, wholly unaware. When she finally hatched and clawed her way to the surface, she had developed extensive inclusions of pyrite, and was stranded on a planet by herself.

• Although bearing resemblence to lapis lazuli, Idris is made of agate (a mix of chalcedony and quartz).
• She has a strong sense of a planet's magnetic field and can manipulate it somewhat to produce an aurora; this is how she communicates with her distant family.
• Her pyrite inclusions are akin to vitiligo and cover her body in a similar pattern.
• Her left eye has partial heterochromia due to her pyrite inclusions.
