Dustfang was never meant to live long.
He was born in a den of hunger and rain, tucked against the side of his rogue she cat mother who loved him fiercely, desperately.. just long enough to throw herself between him and CrookedClan’s claws. She died protecting him. The patrol brought him back as a trophy, not a kit. CrookedClan, hungry for power and numbers, let him stay, but not belong. He was raised in isolation, glared at like prey, and taught he would never be one of them.
Then he appeared.
Hollowheart.
Bold, foolish, radiant Hollowheart, who didn’t see Dustfang’s scars as weakness but as proof he had survived something. As apprentices, they clung to each other in secret, in stolen moments beneath the stars. Hollowheart was everything Dustfang wasn’t allowed to be: fierce, admired, born of CrookedClan blood. But Dustfang fell in love anyway.
And when he let Dustfang win the Fang Trial, when CrookedClan turned their backs and spat his worth into the dirt, it was Hollowheart who never left his side.
“If CrookedClan won’t give you your warrior name… I will.”
“How does Dustfang sound? I think it suits you.”
Hollowheart called him that at the hollow. Only him. And that was enough to keep Dustfang going, even as he began to understand how this would end.
Because Dustfang always knew how their story would end.
From the moment their paws brushed in the dark, he knew CrookedClan would never let them both live. So he began to rehearse his own death. Every move. Every moment. A silent offering to fate.
He would let Hollowheart kill him if it meant Hollowheart would survive.
Because Hollowheart had a future: a name that mattered, a fire that deserved to burn bright.
And Dustfang?
He was just the shadow that made Hollowheart's light look brighter.
