Newt is skilled in the manipulation of dark magic, however the more he uses it, the more it consumes him, and he loses himself, thus he does not like to resort to using it if he is able. He does not enjoy the demonic influences, and thus puts off using his magic as much as possible, primarily to hide or limit his demonic traits.
Charmspeak
Along with his magic, he has the ability to charm those he comes into contact with. This is useful for getting information of the whereabouts of those he used to hunt, but does not have much need for this ability anymore, unless in dire circumstances.
Collected
Even under extreme pressure, Newt is able to keep a level head. This does not mean he is not uncomfortable in these situations, he is simply able to disconnect himself from his emotions, and thinks logically.

Jack [ best friend ]
Jack was the first angel that Newt met on the surface after he fell, and the one who turned him away from being a hunter after a lot of back and forth, and months of time spent together and Newt chasing after him. There was an underlying sense of familiarity with Jack that set Newt at ease, making it much more easy to trust him, which was unfortunate given his role at the time of a Hunter, and made it far easier for Jack to steer Newt from his somewhat aggressive tendencies. Jack is also one of the few beings that can get Newt to focus, and pull him from his full form, calming him down. He is working on helping Newt open up to mortals, however the more they seem to muck up and cause problems, the more difficult it is for Jack to reach that goal.
Eddie [ mentor ]
Eddie is the only other demon that Newt knows of that is peaceful like him. Eddie may not always be the friendliest of demons, but he does his best to keep conflict between angels and demons out of the mortal realm. He is teaching Newt how to hone his powers and magic so the demonic influence does not overtake him as easily. It is a slow-going process, and Eddie is rather impatient, but they are doing their best so they can keep conflicts at bay.
Waz [ friend ]
Waz and Newt are not particularly close, but they have been able to bond over their mutual interest in books. They talk about whatever their newest read was, and have a sort of book club going on. Newt finds the atmosphere and peace of Waz's library comforting, as it is serene and quiet, and just outside there are many small woodland creatures for him to admire. The general vibe Waz gives off is very comforting and peaceful to Newt.
