Aurum

Backstory

Aurum was raised by her mother in the mountains near the palace. After the first few years of her life, her mother, Falcon, began to leave for days at a time to work in the city by the palace, helping to construct new buildings. That left Aurum and her twin sister, Aster (who later renamed herself Incendiary), alone with only each other's company. Aster would sometimes go into the city to buy supplies and food, but because of her firescales, Aurum spent all of her time in the mountains and never ventured into town. She met a few travelers here and there, but they never hung around long enough for her to have any close friendships with any of them. 

She met Princess Rubellite one day while she was enjoying the sun on a boulder. Rubellite was scouting out the nearby forests and discovered Aurum. The two instantly hit it off, and Rubellite promised to return. They began to meet up frequently, flying over the mountains and enjoying each other's company. When Rubellite first asked Aurum to come live in the palace with her, Aurum was hesitant. She'd spent her whole life up until that point mostly in solitude, having only two other dragons she was close to. After much persuading from the princess and the guarantee that her firescales wouldn't be an issue, Aurum came to live in the palace. 

Rubellite's mother and the queen at the time, Beryl, did not like dragons she deemed "unnatural," such as firescales or animus (she would never learn that Rubellite was an animus). As soon as she saw Aurum, she planned for an execution, but Rubellite was able to talk her out of that by claiming Aurum as her personal guest. For a few weeks, Rubellite and Aurum were left in peace, and the princess enchanted several pieces of jewelry to give to Aurum, including a medallion that gave her control over her firescales. But then, Beryl decided that having Aurum around was detrimental to her standing as queen and imprisoned her using some magic chains she had acquired from an animus (even though she looked down on animus dragons, she was happy to utilize their magic for herself). There wasn't much Rubellite was able to do (though she hated her mother, she would never use her magic on another dragon to sway their opinion), and she only saw one option. She challenged Beryl for the throne and won and was able to free Aurum.

Aurum is very happy with her life, though she is very stressed about the growing tensions between the Alliances. The border with the SandWings has held a few battles recently, and Queen Okapi has been threatening the SkyWings relentlessly. Despite this, her family is doing well. Her daughter, Sierra, is an esteemed diplomat and would make a good queen one day-- but Aurum doesn't like to think about what a challenge would mean. Merlin is doing well as an advisor to Queen Rubellite, and Dawn is carefree and outgoing. Incendiary and her husband are very involved in the battles with the SandWings, and Aurum knows her sister and her troops are prepared in case an all-out war between the Alliances breaks. 

Personality

Aurum is very determined and strong-willed, even to the point of stubbornness. She cares deeply about those close to her, and often worries about what could happen to them. She's afraid of herself and her firescales. She acts very tough and stoic, but has more emotions than she'll ever let on.
