Desideratum is a world occupied solely by animals. Each species (cat, dog, fox, rabbit, etc) is ruled by a royal family. There are hundreds of kingdoms.
The royal family's children naturally take over the throne, but in the common case that the litter is more than 1 child, a special royal advisor for each clan will choose the child to take over as prince or princess. Unlike most places, there is never a prince and a princess, only one. Whoever the prince or princess chooses as their suitor will marry into the royal family.
Because of this, cross breeding outside of species is highly discouraged and frowned upon, although possible in Desideratum.
