Profile

Tanner, as she appears in a Root TTRPG campaign I'm playing. Her circumstances are very different, but she is largely the same character.

Personality
Tanner is anxious and fearful with a strong distaste for conflict and fighting. She is deeply sympathetic for the plights of others, especially those whose circumstances remind her of her own. She is impulsive and will often go out of her way to help others even if it should have negative repercussions for her or her allies. Tanner is emotionally fragile and prone to dwelling for far too long on subjects that cause her pain.
Deep beneath the surface, Tanner is full of anger towards the different groups vying for control of the Woodland, and blames them all for the loss of her parents and the instability of her life as a whole. She especially hates the Eyrie for taking her parents away from her. She does her best to bottle this anger up, but it's sure to burst one of these days.
Because of her vagabond upbringing, Tanner isn't comfortable staying in one place for too long. She has to stay on the mood, otherwise she grows restless. She feels that she has to continue her parents' legacy, and if she settles down then she won't be able to live up to them.
Tanner is transgender and only recently began presenting as female. She is unsure if she'll change her name, and is anxious about running into those who knew her as a male.

History
Tanner has never had any sort of stability in her life, save for her parents, Oswin and Ellaine. They were vagabonds who, after the destruction of their home clearing, traveled the Woodland performing odd jobs to get by. Because they had nowhere to call home, Tanner was raised on the road. When she was very young, she'd be left in the care of one parent while the other went on a mission; occasionally she'd be looked after by one of her parents' friends while they worked. She idolized her parents, seeing them as brave heroes and adventurers who would always do anything they could to help those in need. She was largely kept in the dark of her parents' activities when she wasn't around, but never believed them to be up to anything bad. As she grew older her parents began training her, and by the time she was 10 she began joining her parents on missions. Tanner was very happy to be able to help, even though she was still kept far away from serious danger.
On one mission Tanner's parents were killed by an agent of the Eyrie, and Tanner witnessed the entire thing. The only reason she survived was because she was hiding at the time. She managed to recover her father's spear from the scene, but her mother's axe went missing and hasn't been seen since. Her parents' sudden death shook Tanner to her core; they were her rock, and without them she was alone in the Woodland with nowhere to call home. Tanner wound up drifting from place to place, staying with various allies of parents as she struggled to process her grief.
After some time she managed to find the strength to set out on her own and continue the work her parents began. Around this time she also came to the realization that she wasn't male, and began presenting as female. She met other vagabonds who knew her parents, and eventually the five of them banded together to form a group.

Skills

  • Tanner wields her father's spear, Promise. She prefers to use it to disarm opponents than to actually inflict harm. Aside from being a powerful weapon, Promise is something of a comfort item, and she dislikes letting others hold or use it.
  • As a squirrel, Tanner is a talented climber and possesses an excellent sense of balance. The training she received from her parents only improved her skills, allowing her to perform impressive feats of acrobatics. Tanner is also skilled at tracking and stealth. She strongly prefers using her skills to find non-violent ways to accomplish missions.
  • When she was young her mother would whittle wooden toys for her, and Tanner learned how to whittle from her. She continues to whittle to this day as a way to occupy her paws and mind when her thoughts became too much to bear. She likes to whittle little figurines of critters she's met or things she's seen.
