Kindhearted Simpleton Please Kill Me If It Satisfies You Idiot Savant Disappointing Older Sibling The Quiet One Horrible Judge Of Character Formerly Friendly Family Unpleasant Parent Reveal

Clay has a very transparent personality, He likes to do right by the relationships in his life. A very loyal and trustworthy friend to have, probably to a fault in fact. He takes better care of his friends than he does his own self. He tends to keep most of his burdens to himself, and hes very good at that. Suffer-in-private sort of guy. But that doesnt really stifle the air around him, Clay has a very calm and warm demeanor to him. It is relaxing to be around Clay one might say. He might have been a lot more neurotic in his early years but the days have truly relaxed him since being away from Butcher's Creek. Don't get me wrong though, he is still squirmy and fidgetty. Always working on something or helping others work on something. He likes to be constantly occupied with work or hobbies as to not get too into his own head and freak himself out that way. But the people in his life understand that it's just the way he is; A paranoid and neurotic person. It may be due to the religious trauma in his childhood, or it could just be from the many people whom have cut him a little too deep. He likes to think the best of people regardless, or he tries to, keeping the paranoia to himself or atleast to himself and Nicky.

NEUTRAL TRAITS

  • Hardworking
  • Submissive

NEGATIVE TRAITS

  • Withdrawn
  • Timid
  • Crude
  • Gullible
  • Nervous

While not intentional, Clay is very crass and crude. Unsophisticated and doltish you could say. He cant really help it though, he was raised that way and noone really ever told him that it was bad. He might say things is a rude manner, or be a little too blunt. He won't be offended if you respond back the same way, as that is just how the people of Butcher's Creek talk to one another. I would call Clay strong-willed, he knows what he wants and is determined to get it. But I wouldnt say that he is very domineering or a leader in any way. In fact he is very submissive to most personality types, he is a helping hand not a dominant figurehead. He enjoys being given direction, being told what to do even. It qwells his anxiety to be given orders because then he knows what he should be doing and doesnt have to stress over it. While Clay is not helpless, he does depend on others for many things like remembering the day of the week or where he keeps his tools. His brain fog really gets the best of him and he really needs the aid of another person to help him remember things. He may be forgetful and clumsy sometimes, but one thing he is not is lazy. Clay is a very hard-working individual; and with a poor sense of time he will keep working and working until exhaustion.

Shy Outgoing

Honest Deceptive

Humble Arrogant

Meek Confident

Reckless Cautious

Loud Quiet

Cruel Kind

Lazy Hardworking

Selfish Altruistic

Sensitive Resilient

Clay is always willing to learn, he would get alot of enjoyment out of being taught a new skill or bettering the ones he has. He also likes to teach too and will be very excited to teach a friend something he knows how to do. But I wouldn't say he is a very smart individual, he does and thinks a lot of stupid things. It isn't ever anything harmful though, mostly silly things that are funny to hear and fun to laugh about. Clay is a funny fellow, not on purpose mind you, but he is very sincere and earnest with his actions and words. Regardless he is funny if you are smarter than he is (which I am willing to bet most are) and Clay is very tolerant about that. He knows hes not very bright and doesnt take the giggling at him to heart. He might even bring up times when he said some dumb shit to lighten the mood or to spark conversation during travelling. Clay is very tolerant about most things, even if you have a quirk that annoys him, he wont bring it up if you aren't harming anyone. He would want you to leave him be just the same as he does you.

CHILDHOOD (0-14)

Born into an incestuous family line on top of the arsenic poisoning in the water and food, Clay didn't really start out the best. He had a lot of struggles growing up; remaining mute until he was 9 or 10 and had only started learning to walk at 4. His family really didnt worry too much about his developmental delays either since most of the town had some sort of ailment or birth defect. This didn't make him a target for bullying though; He was in fact, even protected and sheltered from the developing world around him. He was not allowed to go outside his family's home, much less the border of Butcher Creek. He did get along quite well with one of his half brothers on his mother's side, Clifford. Who would often loiter around Clay's family home and talk to him through the dilapidated walls. Clifford would often leave trinkets and presents on his windowsill so that Clay could ,in a way, experience the outside world with him. Jenny, Both their mothers, saw this and encouraged their friendship. With Clifford's guidance, Clay was allowed out of the house under his supervision even though Clay was the older of the two. Clifford enjoyed the calm presence that Clay's demeanor dispersed, he wasn't shy or insecure like Clifford had initially thought someone who lived in a room for their whole life would be. His movements were diliberate, His words intentional. He never wasted his words. Clifford liked that about him, he enjoyed the calming silence between them. "People are always pretending." He told Clay one time. "Pretending to listen, or like you." In turn Clay benefitted from Clifford's confidence and courageous attitude. He could always rely on Clifford's ability to understand him without words and talk them out of trouble. Even though he had many pyschical and mental disabilities, Clay was very emotionally intelligent; This made him more of a father figure than a brother to Clifford. He really looked to Clay for approval and comfort.

He finally convinced his mother to let him go into Van Horn to work as a stablehand for income at around 13. This upset the whole town once it got out, as this was seen as betrayal and heresy since to them he was supporting industrialization which infringed on their rights to live the way they did. The agitation only grew as he continued working. One night, while Clay was asleep, most of the town had decided to take him and sacrifice him. They believed he was a test from god and in killing him, God would reward them by removing the sicknesses that pretty much the whole town was infected with. His parents tried to barricade the door but they flooded in from all sides, the screaming and noise snatched Clay from his sleep. Startled and scared, he managed to evade their grip and fled into the unknown wilds that surrounded him. Stumbling and sometimes even crawling on his hands and knees; he made it to the stables near Van Horn. He jumped the fence, creeped into the stables, stole one of the horses he grew quite affectionate with and high-tailed it in a random direction leaving Clifford behind..

EMERALD RANCH (14-16)

Emerald Ranch is the first town he reaches after what happened in Butcher Creek. Meeting two men, James Jacobbs and Roman Montoya, after being caught stealing stale bread from the back of the saloon late at night. The two decide not to punish Clay and instead invite him to work around the stables. Mr. Jacobbs was particularly shocked about how Clay knew basically nothing about the outside world beyond his hometown, or even how to use forks and spoons. Clay's religious ramblings didn't annoy them too much, and he spoke of it less and less as the ranch got busier and busier. These two or so years allowed Clay to refine his skills and learn new ones, even if it was pretty short-lived.

The townsfolk of Emerald Ranch got word about several savage attacks to towns/industrialized areas surrounding Butcher Creek. The attacks got more specific, kidnapping/killing men that looked similar to Clay in age and hair colour. Knowing of Clay's past, James tried to explain to him that he should flee further west and that he would send a letter to his family out in Valentine to get him work there. Clay initially refused, not wanting to believe his family would really behave that way. But, on one sunny morning, Clay was attacked by someone he never expected. Clifford. He was shoved to the ground and held there in the muddy paddock of the sheep pens. All he could do was watch in horror, stunned in shock, as Clifford took a dull serrated knife to the base of his forehead. Attempting to scalp Clay alive. Luckily it was bright and early in the morning, many ranchers/workers were around to help pry Clifford off the poor boy. James was the main hero, plucking Clifford off Clay and wrestled him around while shouting at Clay to run. All he could hear was the pounding in his ears and Clifford's hysterical screaming. "You left me!" and "I'll fucking kill you, Leslie!" kept replaying in his head as he rode off. Straight out to Valentine. Hoping James would make good with his offer on his letter.

  • "Clay" is his last name, but he likes to be called it more than his actual name on account that most of his family called him Leslie and it hurts to be reminded of them. He will allow people closest to him call him it though, so he can have newer, better memories of the name. Like Nicky and James.
  • While Clay cannot read, he can write out his and Nicky's names. If Nicky is reading something he likes to point out the words that resemble their names.
  • He is not much of a talker, he likes to listen most of the time. He prefers most other ways of communication before using his words, like pointing to what he wants or shoulder tapping to get someones attention. It could be a developmental delay due to his genetics, or it's just the way he is.
  • He is actually taller than 5'7" but he has bad posture due to his gravedigging days; He is always hunched over.
  • Clay suffers from a lot of conditions thanks to his incestuous family, brain fog and joint-locking are the two main problems that effect his daily living. He will lose his train of thought at any given time and be completely confused. His joints (mostly in the hands) will lock up or have a latency.
  • He unfortunately has a very ill-tempered looking face, despite being very tolerant and kind. This gets Clay into lots of trouble when he visits towns and saloons. He is unaware of it, sadly.
  • Clay is a very messy person, he doesnt mind cleaning up its just that he doesnt see the problem with leaving things where they are last left. Doesn't see the point in baths either as he says that the mud and soot "protect his skin from the sun".

Cliff

Half Brother

They have a serious cain complex, the two of them.

While kids, they were practically inseperable. Leslie being the older one and Cliff being the younger. Not by much. About 3 or so years apart. Regardless, they got on well as kids. But, when all hell broke loose with Leslie being named pariah by the whole town including his own father, he abandoned him. Running from his problems was just like him, maybe Cliff should have seen it coming. After all, Leslie was a sheltered and sensitive kid. How else would he react? But it's too late, Leslie had abandoned him, without a second thought. Didn't even attempt to take him along. He would of went too. He would of followed that idiot to the edges of the earth and as Leslie shuffled his way down that point of no return Clay would of been right behind him. But that didn't happen, did it? No. He'd been left with the religious zealots they both named family. Cliff would not take this- this betrayal as it were lying down, no. He'll do something about it. Revenge maybe. Or what he deems it to be.

Nicky

Travel Companion

Nicky is Clay's longest running friendship,

They met while Nicky was a Saloon Girl in Valentine. Clay was in town doing temp work to earn money to make it South-West and would always go into the saloon to pay Nicky to read him books and newspapers so he could learn new skills and better the ones he already had. After a couple years of Valentine, Nicky was now a rancher but they still remained friends and she still read him his books. They both were well equipped to leave the town, on their horses, saying goodbye to eachother before going down their own paths. But; Clay was headed in the complete wrong direction. So Nicky figured she ought to bring him along so he doesnt get completely lost, and they have been travelling together since then.

James

Friend

A friendship struck up during Clay's time in Emerald Ranch.

Clay was around 13-14 by the time he reached Emerald Ranch, disheveled and lost faith in his religion and family. He was quite a mess. His overall feral upbringing and sheltered childhood was quite offputting and startling to the older man. He thought he was going crazy, seeing blips of red hair in the corner of his vision around the ranch. Until one night, he was doing one last visual check on the horse stalls. Maybe he could spruce it up a little before they were retired for the night, he thought. He won't ever get the sight of a scrawny, bleary-eyed child hunched in the corner beside the last of the stalls. He was nearly naked, except for a pair of overalls too big to be worn by a child. They were rolled up asymmetrically, one side almost rolled above his knee and the other lay limp around his ankle, threatening to unroll and trip him up. Once he realized he'd been spotted, and cornered no doubt, he jumped out of his skin. Spilling the contents of the buckets and sacks he was rummaging in, spilling vegetables and dense feed in front of him. Leslie backed himself further into the corner, hands wound around behind him and splayed out along the walls. James won't forget the look of pure fear in those little brown eyes. Needless to say, James had a tough challenge ahead of him and started to domesticate this.. wild animal, in the shape of a boy.

Tabbycat

Friend

Another friendship formed in Emerald Ranch.

Though Tabby works at Guthrie's Farm, he occasionally ventures to Emerald Ranch to visit his good friend James to drain his stock of good ale. He met Leslie that way, coming down one sunday to chat and drink merrily only to find his very best friend took on a very odd underhand. But any friend of James would be a friend of his! And so, he helped teach Leslie works of the trade. And maybe taught him how to have a little fun in the process too.
