Personality

Because of social anxiety and general unease towards most people he comes off as cold, indifferent and maybe even a bit rude, despite his attempts at being polite to most he meets. Due to past experiences and just mental illness in general he’s put up many walls and tends to bottle up a lot of feelings and emotions. He’s extremely stubborn and hates asking for help or admitting anything’s wrong, all of which makes it hard for most people to get close to him. Despite his facade of being a rather stoic person he’s actually a very kind hearted man and extremely loyal. He’d do pretty much anything for those he cares about and at times can be self sacrificing. He overall has a mentality of putting others well being before his own which stems mostly from low self-esteem and fear of losing those he cares for. He’s actually quite passive and prefers to avoid confrontation. Being personally insulted would do little to antagonize him however the second anyone he cares about is brought up he wouldn’t hesitate to jump to their defense, regardless if they need it or not.

People with louder, stronger personalities tend to make him feel uncomfortable and he’ll most likely try to avoid most people like that. Meanwhile he gravitates to quieter people and warms up to them much faster. He also has a tendency to get himself into awkward situations or say things that he’ll later beat himself over due to anxiety and having a lack of understanding of social cues, though he almost always means well. He prefers people to be straightforward with him, not having a tolerance for roundabout ways of describing things, more so in a professional environment ie; work. But once you’ve actually gotten him to warm up to you, he’ll start to become less afraid to state his opinion and joke around more. His sense of humor can range from obscure, outdated memes to dry and sarcastic jokes that can be hard to catch.

Quirk Explanation

By activating his quirk he can summon shadowy voids that he can manipulate in a small variety of ways

• Can pull large blob like masses of shadows from the voids and use them offensively, they can be used to pick up targets, as a shield etc.There is a limit, a rough estimate would be that he could summon enough shadows to say, move a car or pick up a large wall/debris but the heavier & bigger the targets, the more strenuous it would be to control.
• He uses his hands/arms to control the shadows (think avatar: the last airbender but less movement) that being said if he can't move at least on hand he cannot use his quirk.
• He can also enter the voids himself and use them as a form of teleportation/travel but it only works in relatively small range (possibly up to.. ½ mile/0.8km).
• Depending on his physical and mental state, he can stay in the void for varying amounts of time. After awhile the void will start to cause him mental distress, essentially feeding on his psyche and at times he can have a hard time escaping, unable to regain control. When this does happen and he does escape he will come out of the void with shadows clinging to him, almost like they’re trying to drag him back into the void..
• He speculates that his quirk almost has its own.. Presence.. Consciousness?(almost similar to dark shadow) But he cannot confirm nor deny that… it’s just a feeling he has.
• He can't use his quirk consecutively for more than roughly 3 hours at a time or he’ll turn into his ‘dormant’ form for an undetermined amount of time.
• He turns into a small, quirkless, black cat with burgundy horns when he overuses his quirk. And, occasionally, when he feels particularly threatened, vulnerable or if he ever feels the need to. He cannot speak to humans in this form however he can type(he retain’s his intelligence/personality etc). This form comes in handy if he’s been beaten, can’t use his quirk and needs to get away quickly without being seen but otherwise he sees it as an inconvenience
• His eyes turn solid black (excluding his pupils) when his quirk is activated.

Statistics

Background

• Both of his parents were pro heroes, his mom retired early into Koata’s childhood to find a more secure job meanwhile his dad.. Disappeared. Around the same time.
• Koata realized he was trans at a very young age and his family was more or less understanding, overall he had a positive experience growing up trans and is pretty open about it now, feeling no shame or reason to hide it.
• He got his quirk mostly from his dad!! And was very close with him when he was little, he was much more of a timid child than his sister so his dad may have had some favoritism for him, seeing as they had similar quirks + personalities. However his sister was a lot more like their mom, louder, bolder and more independent.
• He was around 8 when his dad disappeared and it was a little.. Rough. He had a lot of bad feelings towards heroes for a few years and refused his quirk but he eventually came back around and ended up applying to UA’s Hero Course.

• He graduated from UA and started his career as an Underground Pro Hero, mostly focusing on cleaning up the city of petty criminals/those who are harder to capture.
• He works with the police often to aid in capturing criminals. He HATES the way the media has spun hero work and he avoids being in the spotlight as much as possible (think Eraserhead) as he believes being popular isn't necessary to do his job.
• Though he won’t hesitate to help with search/rescue or villain fights if he’s needed he just won’t humor the media AT ALL and avoid them if they try to get ahold of him on the scenes of the incidents lmao.
• His 20’s were full of overworking himself and overall just. An unhealthy balance between work and his social life. He eventually took a teaching position at UA when he was 28 which then forced him to manage his time better.. He’s slowly learning to be a more functional human being but it’s taking some Time and Effort.
