Before he became Gustav's apprentice. Ivan was travelling around taking pieces of well known Frankenstein's in order to complete himself and took them by force. When he'd completed his body he decided he wanted to be smarter, so he traveled around under many names and would incapacitate, and open the head caps of prominent Frankenstein's monsters and take the pieces of the brain that held the knowledge that he wanted.
When he got to Gustav he was very nearly the smartest Frankenstein's monster in the world. He was after Gustav's knowledge on travel between the human and Monster world, and when he showed up to take it Gustav made him laugh by flirting with him in terror. Gustav opened his head cap and took out a piece of the part of his brain that held compassion and have it to him. After that Ivan more or less understood the gravity of what he'd done and became his assistant (and eventually boyfriend.)
When researching opening a portal between the human and monster world, there was an accident and Gustav died, opening a permanent portal between the two. With the very few pieces left of him after the rip in dimensions, Ivan used parts from both of them to construct a daughter in order to keep part of him alive.
He's a single dad to Igorra and runs a dated little cafe and lives a normal life. Watching their daughter play with the human kids that now intermingle with monster a society. He chooses not to tell her about their research or their pasts.
Ivan isnt the best crafstmen, he was an assistant when his master passed, so its largely Ivans fault that Igorra is so clumsy later on in life, all of her limbs come disjointed and she goes knock-kneed sometimes and drops trays of things. She was also pretty heavilly made fun of in school as wel.
