Re'nais Onair ⛓

Despite having lived as an orphan and vagabond for most of his life, Re’nais is a very nonchalant man. He goes with the flow of things, is relatively deadpan, carefree, and doesn't take many things seriously. He often complains about the work given to him, and is usually seen at the local bar afterwards for a drink or two. Or twenty.

His passive, blank demeanor is but a mask he wears, in an attempt to distance himself from others, and perhaps even his own self. He buries many regrets and deaths into the depths of his heart, and many who may know him during his time as a retainer may note that “He too, had died during the battle within the Vault.” WIP

With all his faults, however, Ren is a man with good intentions -- to protect those he cares for. He will and has gone through great lengths to protect his loved ones, careless and apathetic to the injuries he may inflict upon himself in doing so. He is reckless when it comes to others, and holds no regards for his own safety and limits.

Childhood

For as long as he could remember, Re’nais was one of the many orphan children who ran amok within the Brumes of Ishgard. With the Dragonsong war in full swing, the Heaven's Ward and even some of the Temple Knights grew short-tempered with the stress of war, and often threw their problems towards the residents of the Brume. Re’nais was a victim of various knights’ outbursts, but he grew accustomed to their yelling, chasing, and general abuse of power.

He wasn’t much of a goody two shoes either (some may say a few of his run-ins with the knights “had it coming” for him). Many people, including other residents of the Brume, rarely spoke to him. He stole food and clothes from anyone and everyone, and never stayed in one place for too long. After battles with the Dravanians, if they were near the Foundation or the Final Steps of Faith, Re’nais would venture out under the veil of night to scavenge corpses of fallen Knights and Dravanians alike for food, weapons, and other things that could be of use to him.

Despite his wayward attitude, Ren still holds compassion for others, however little it may be. He often acted as a sort of “Robin Hood” for other kids in the Brume younger than him, helping them in some round-about way, and refusing to accept any thanks in return. Younger kids came to admire him for his work, and looked up to him.

Even if he didn't show it, Ren grew to care deeply for the kids in return, evidently so when he came to their aid when one of them fell sick and passed. Others still struggled through hardships, and Re’nais came to their aid; sticking it to the man when a child was unable to withstand beatings from the Knights, lending the clothes on his back to another who developed hypothermia, and giving the spoils of his scavenging trips to those who needed it.

He and the group of kids grew close as a result. This wouldn't last long, however, as a Dravanian battle came just too close to the Foundation and caused damage to the Brume, collapsing stone buildings and crushing those who were unfortunate to be under the falling debris. While Ren made it out alive, some of the other children did not, and their deaths weigh heavy in his heart.

Re’nais continued to live this kind of scavenging and roundabout Robin Hood type of lifestyle up until he was 14. It was then he met Haurchefant Greystone of House Fortemps, who had heard of his acts of “hesitant heroism” and extended his hand to Re’nais in hopes of forming a connection with him, and bringing him into his family as an attendant or retainer. At first he declines the offer, but after months of relentless bombarding by the young elezen, he finally gives in. The next few years are spent with him, living and training within House Fortemps, as well as making frequent stops to the Brume to continue giving to the less fortunate.

Heavensward

Re’nais, having only sworn loyalty under Haurchefant, becomes his personal retainer. He is often found standing by Haurchefant’s chair at Camp Dragonhead, and is there when the Warrior of Light, Alphinaud, and Tataru come to Haurchefant for help after the Ul’danian Revolution. He is also there during the events of the Vault, but like the WOL, fails to foresee what happens to Haurchefant. After Haurchefant’s passing, he formally leaves House Fortemps (with blessings and the offer of an ever welcoming warm home with Count Edmont), and goes on to self imposed exile for failing to protect him.

Currently

He continues to live in self imposed exile as a vagabond, wandering from place to place and taking on whatever jobs are asked of him, however reluctantly. He sticks around Coerthas, and can sometimes be found somewhere within the North Shroud.
