The illegitimate daughter of a noble fairy and an imp, Opal is used to receiving odd stares. Despite taking after her fae mother in personality, strangers often see her (albeit small) horns and assume the worst of her. Determined to make a name for herself and improve the reputation of imps, she studies obsessively in as many subjects as possible. She is currently enrolled in a prep school for humans, believing that they are the key to teaching magical creatures to accept each other's differences. She studies potions and is close friends with Coquelicot, and can often be found at the medicine seller's cottage, sometimes accompanied by Nephelai (usually to her dismay).

Opal is serious and honest, preferring to tell the truth and possibly offend someone over keeping the peace. She is proud and can come off as arrogant, but is secretly self-conscious about her lack of magical skill, and her inability to make friends. Opal can almost always be found with a book (or three) reading somewhere alone, in Coquelicot's company, or admonishing Nephelai for his latest prank.

Her mother was previously married to a Faerie nobleman of great status. He was a respectable man, but married her mother for political reasons. Although he cared for her deeply as family, he did not attempt to kindle a romantic relationship with her. Their relationship remained this way for many years after the birth of their twins. Because of this, he was unsurprised to find out she was pregnant with another's child.

Understanding that his wife needed someone who could offer her more than just financial support, he said nothing of the years-long affair and promised to raise Opal as one of his own. He taught her to read and write from an early age, and fostered a love of learning in her, to prepare her for a world that would not accept her. He passed away when she was a young girl, leaving his estate to all three of his children, and signing a certificate of divorce for his wife to be with the one she loved.

• Her parents are happily married despite the societal judgement, and are supportive of her educational choices, but they worry that she will open herself up to too much hardship by choosing a human school.

• She has twin older half-siblings: sister and brother, who are pure-blooded Faeries. They love their sister and have a good relationship, but they do not fully understand her struggles with being accepted.
• She has naturally curly hair but straightens it out of convenience (and in an effort to fit in).
• She likes being short, but hates having to use ladders to reach the higher shelves in the library.
• She does have wings like both of her parents, but she had them suppressed while she lives around humans. Her name comes from the oplaescent shimmer they give off when out.
