This little boy doesn't have much of a backstory. When he was alive he was a slave to a horrible owner who kept him and several others chained and shackled. Zulan was a favorite of his master's and took the brunt of any physical abuse that Barghest dished out. When warriors came to take out the darkened Barghest he killed all his slaves, keeping Zulan for last. The young cheetah cub watched a warrior's knife plunged into his masters' head right before the young soul died. Instead of moving on like the other slaves Zulan chose to remain and wander the world, he decided to help others who find themselves trapped and alone both physically and not.
