Burn the witch

Current head of the Blackwing family and a tired non-mage Vintner who just wants to figure out the truth behind their family mystery. Distrustful of mages and prefers to keep their friends on the side of non-mages.

Personality

They’re cold and dedicated to their work and own set goals. Brook does not show their love openly and keeps at a distance to any relationship they might have unless it is business related, though it does not mean that they hate their wife, children or still breathing mother, it means that they do not want to get hurt again. They have a way with words and only say things that they believe would result in the correct outcome.
Through sleepless nights with the dream of a monster appearing out of nowhere, attacking them, they always feel tired and exhausted but they always push those problems aside, much to the worry of their wife and children.

They’re very distrustful of mages as Brook believes that they are nothing more than ticking time bombs who suddenly might snap at them and hurt them and their family. Brook would rather give their life than see any of their family die to a mage’s work.

History

Born into the Blackwing family, Brook received the best care a non-mage could hope for. Loving parents, no worries about any magic or corruption setting off at any moment. Their parents always told them that it was dangerous to be charmed by a mage - or be one yourself. You could lose yourself and harm the ones you loved. Back when he was still a child, he was always curious why that was the case but he was too young back then.

He wasn’t poor, no, the winery, which has been owned by generations, makes good money with its sales per year so the equine never had to worry about getting by with food or anything else. They weren’t very keen on making friends with others of their age, mostly keeping to themselves whenever they could.
When they got older, their parents finally put down the cards on the table. They told them about a tragedy which happened over 300 years ago - the head of the family at the time, Croax Blackwing, turned into a horrible raven-monster like creature which was only fueled by blood and hate. Croax apparently had killed everyone in their house - parents, siblings, maids and servants. Even guests and customers weren’t spared. Their parents also added that the ‘threat’ had been contained and that they should never worry about that monstrous mage again.
Though Brook could tell in the voice of their parents that they were unsure if it ever happened as they are born with Blackwing blood through the officially only known survivor - the oldest sister of Croax Blackwing, who was not in their home at the time.

At 16 years of age, they finally received their face paint for the first time in their life - blue wing-like markings under their eyes would always show that they are part of the Blackwing winery - no matter what.

The conversation with their parents continued to shape Brook’s perspective of mages who are just ticking time bombs to them. Who knew when a mage would suddenly lash out and kill them, their family and staff? Brook still treated customers who were visibly different or magic-touched the same as any other customer, mainly not to be at the point of anyone’s magic at some point.

Though when they turned 22 things seemed to change for the worst. The family crest of the Blackwing family is a black raven, so when they saw a raven-monster like creature roaming the backyard and through the grape arbors, Brook felt sick. It was late at night - why was this creature there? They couldn’t move before blue eyes made contact with their brown ones. The creature suddenly lunged at them and Brook fainted.

When they awoke, they noticed how terrified their parents were. Crying in fear of losing their child. Brook tried to move but they only felt pain in their shoulder, deep wounds running along them. A doctor, who was living not too far away managed to treat the wounds but the pain would probably never fully go away.

Brook didn’t tell their parents about the creature they saw, shutting down any possible clues and answers they could give. They didn’t want to meet the monster again but curiosity also held them in its icy grasp but they never saw the monster again.

Years passed and now Brook reached the age of 25. Their parents really wanted them to marry a beautiful woman to continue the legacy of the Blackwing family, especially as they had no children. They didn’t want to disappoint their parents, marrying a smaller equine named Estellise. Brook couldn’t particularly feel happy about the marriage but Estellise still became a good friend of theirs.
Together the two had two children - River and Rain whom they both loved deeply.

When their parents grew older and older, they retired from the winery and left Brook to become the Vintner of the winery, which Brook wasn’t prepared for but they couldn’t just back off now after all those years working in the winery.

Estellise raised the children for the most time and Brook worked on keeping the family business going and things seem to get just a little brighter within Brook’s life. The whole family was alive and well.

At 28 years of age, Brook’s father passed after a sickness not going away and him refusing to let the doctor help him, making him the male head of the family. Their mother seemed to be in complete shock, still acting as if their father was still alive. Brook could only watch how their mother became a husk of herself. They tried to shut their emotions away, ignoring the pain and suffering they’re experiencing.
Estellise tried to keep them company and even River and Rain tried to cheer them up but it seemingly had no effect on Brook. Though they never stopped supporting the equine.

Even after years, when Brook turned 32, their mother’s condition hadn’t gotten any better. It seemed to have gotten worse.
“Brook, when will your father come home? He said he was going to come home soon.”
“Please put out a plate for your father as well, you know he hates it when we forget to prepare the table to include him as well.”

One day, while working in the winery a hooded equine came into the building. Brook put on their normal customer voice to deal with the - even if suspicious - customer. Though the striking blue eyes underneath the hood stood out to the vintner - their body almost completely freezing on the spot. The stranger put down a letter and left without saying any words.

“I am sorry for what happened to you ten years ago.”

Brook didn’t know what to feel about that, they ran out of the winery, hoping to catch the stranger's face but the stranger was already gone they took a step outside. They couldn’t get a good look on the stranger’s face, which frustrated the non-mage deeply.
If that stranger knew about what happened all those years ago that could only mean one thing - the stranger was the monster who was possibly a mage that attacked them. They needed to know who they were and why it happened but in the end it made them even more wary of any mages that came and went to the winery. Brook wasn’t even able to trust any order mages anymore.

They spent day and night trying to figure out anything but...even after three long years they had no new clues on the stranger who never showed themselves inside the winery ever again.
The equine was now 35 years old, the only thing slightly stopping them from working on finding the stranger’s whereabouts, were their mother and own children and wife. After all, the kids were turning 10 soon and they should experience their time with their parents.

Though Brook swore to themselves to never give up on finding the stranger, no matter what.
