crosses don't hurt her because she's quite devout
-her early childhood was average but soon a false investing scam plunged her family into debt, so she went to work at a rich family's house as a maid to try helping her family. her other sibling, a brother several years older than her who she wasn't particularly close or distant to, had joined the army for the same reason.
-the rich family had many servants in the house but the staff was always overworked and treated badly. there was even a guard stationed around certain areas where unhappy servants may try to escape before their length of service was out, but Angeline found out that one of them had poor eyesight in the dark, so if that guard was on duty and it was a particularly dark night, she could leave the manor. Despite finding a way to escape, she would always return before morning because if she ran away her family wouldn't receive any of her pay.
-unfortunately, less than a year into her time as a maid, her mother became ill but due to their debt was unable to receive treatment and passed away. her father followed soon after of a broken heart. Angeline found this out all in one day, when she finally was allowed to take a few days' leave to see her parents for her birthday. her neighbor told her that her parents were gone and buried in the church graveyard, and her brother hadn't been sending money or letters home in a while either. the only way to wake up from a nightmare is to start the day, so in an empty daze she returned to work.
-from that moment on, her dark night escapes took her to the graveyard where her parents lay side by side, where she would reminisce or tell them about her day. it was here that her and Micah first met (she was ~14 and he was ~13), since Micah would sneak out past the church graveyard to read books or relax. though she no longer had a family to send her paycheck to, she kept working to pay off the last of her parents' debt (which was now possible on a maid's salary because her family's house had been sold in her absence, so the debt was now much smaller).
-her and micah are both people who are looked at for what their bodies can do (in terms of everyone wanting them to work mostly, but also there are ppl who want to use them romantically) so it's really good for them to have each other... micah is mostly liked by girls in town but when they get to know him more they find him a bit weird and offputting (and he's gay lol), and male staff at the manor have been interested in angeline but she has no desire for romance. she once shared a kiss with another maid at the manor that she found pretty but both of them agreed it wasn't really an experience that needed to be repeated.
-a few years later she suddenly stopped visiting as whispers of a serial killer circulated
-Micah thought she had been killed and gained an intense fear of the dark, thinking Angeline's killer was lurking in every shadow. one day he saw her again in the graveyard waiting for him, but she was in a noble's clothes rather than her old cleaning uniform. as they talked, he learned that she had gotten attacked and turned into a vampire and was in hiding for fear of killing. she was only able to come to terms with her new deadly nature and bring herself to visit the church grounds once she realized she could easily and guiltlessly prey on certain people who would seek to victimize a girl of her age.
-Angeline and Micah are still best friends to this day, although Angeline thinks Micah often makes foolish life choices, and Micah is upset at the thought of Angeline killing people
