Bossa Nova was born on the island kingdom of Anokoa Girai, where his family kept a bookshop as well as the island's only library. He was set to one day inherit the shop, not something he cared about in particular, but Anokoa Girai is a humble island far removed from modern society, and he was glad to have a life made for him.

However, things were not meant to go so easily for him. When Ataashi's gang of pirates landed on the island and war broke out, Bossa Nova, who wasn't ever truly content with books alone, decided to be a hero and join the Anokoa Girai army. He was a brave soldier, popular amongst his peers. Despite having no formal training, he was tough and diligent, and things seemed to be going smoothly for him at first, fighting at the side of Prince Oberon as well as national heroes like Alan. Things did not continue so well, though. During one particular battle, he was left for dead in the ocean.

When Bossa Nova came to, he was being cared for by a sharkdog named Nanashi, who lived in the depths of the Mariana Trench. Nanashi's primitive people lacked the proper technology to heal his serious wounds, but Nanashi stayed at his side and tended to him as his personal nurse. Realizing his efforts were not enough, Nanashi eventually brought Bossa Nova to the nearest country - Japan. There, in Tokyo, Bossa Nova was taken into a hospital, where he spent weeks and weeks recuperating. When he was let out of the hospital, Bossa Nova had no idea how the modern world worked, no clue where Anokoa Girai was located in the vastness of the oceans, and Nanashi could only take him to the general area where he had been found unconscious all those months ago.

Hopeless, Bossa Nova decided to settle in with Nanashi, but life as a sea sharkdog did not suit him, as he had spent most of his time on land. They came to an agreement. Bossa Nova would live in Tokyo Bay, where he could still spend most of his time on land. He got a job teaching English, as it was the only path he could take knowing absolutely no Japanese. Meanwhile, Nanashi would continue living underwater, but he would be able to visit Bossa Nova at his seaside home. The two fell in love over time, a quiet and modest kind of love, but it worked for them both. Today, they have a son, Maksim, who lives on land with Bossa Nova, which has caused Nanashi to begin spending more time out of the Mariana Trench than he previously did.

Relationships

Nanashi - when Bossa Nova was gravely injured in battle, Nanashi found him barely alive stranded in the ocean and took him home to try and care for him. His injuries were too severe, though, and Nanashi was forced to bring him ashore for help at a nearby hospital. Even after this, though, the pair stayed in contact. Bossa Nova saw Nanashi as his only connection back home, since Nanashi alone knew where his body was found. Despite returning there multiple times, he could never navigate his way back home to Anokoa Girai, and he feared the island was lost to Ataashi anyway. He had to rebuild his life. Nanashi wanted him to move in with him, but Bossa Nova was anxious living so far in the ocean that he could not see the shore. Despite being a sharkdog, he had been born and raised on land. He decided to settle nearby in Tokyo Bay, where Nanashi could easily come visit him from his home at the Mariana Trench. Nanashi absolutely worships Bossa Nova, and Bossa Nova is flattered and treats Nanashi with warmth. The two don't see each other every day. Sometimes, weeks or months go by, and Bossa Nova is terrified that something has happened before Nanashi shows up like nothing has happened. Nanashi is very much a free spirit, whereas Bossa Nova is weighed down by his memories of his home and past.
Maksim - in some ways, letting Bossa Nova keep Maksim with him was Nanashi's way of apologizing for refusing to settle down on land with his mate. He was always there throughout Maks's childhood, but as he got a bit older, Nanashi began disappearing like normal again. While Maks has no ill will towards Nanashi, it did lead him to form an even tighter bond with his other father, Bossa Nova. He is comfortable talking to Bossa Nova about everything, even things most kids don't tell their parents about. He is very respectful and well behaved, and Bossa Nova respects him in turn.
